Here is the start:
(Information from Bebx on Tumblr!)It's a fandom term, mostly used specifically in fanfiction, where a character is put through *emotional and/or physical pain, whether it be illness (such as fever, headache, hypothermia, any kind of illness) or injury (any kind of injury, no matter how small or how severe it is). Any situation where the character is going through a challenging/terrifying situation, such as being kidnapped, tortured, etc, is also considered a Whump.
*in my opinion, emotional pain is more of an angst than a whump. In a way that Whump mostly focuses on physical pain, while Angst mostly focuses on emotional pain. But the line can be blurry sometimes.
Basically, putting a character through hell, hurting them and making them vulnerable in a fanfiction is considered whump
Whumper refers to a character - aka an antagonist - that delivers pain to Whumpee.
While Whumpee refers to a character that's being tortured.
Meanwhile, Caretaker refers to a character that comes for Whumpee's rescue and helps nurse them back to health.
People enjoy whump for various reasons
- Some people can relate to the pain the character goes through, and use that pain as a means to grow and overcome their trauma.
- Some people actually find their getaway and comfort in whump (and there's nothing wrong with that! This is a fictional world so none of it is real).
- Whump can be used as a kink to some people (not everybody who enjoys whump sees it as a kink, but it can be to some people, which is not wrong either).
- Some people (myself included) enjoy whump because of the comfort that follows.
Whump, in general, doesn't necessarily have to include comfort (whump with no comfort can be called hurt-no-comfort), but comfort can be a part of whump (whump with comfort at the end - aka the whumpee is rescued by a caretaker - can be called hurt/comfort)
So some other terms that are associated with Whump are hurt-no-comfort, hurt/comfort, and angst.
