Oh. I just got here and things are already so chaotic.
Will anyone be my friend? It's so unfair. My mom made me move here from Canada, so I'm new to the language. This place is in the middle of Sweden, for God's sake! all I really know is Hej, which means hi.
People were throwing paper airplanes at each other, screaming, and worst of all, speaking Swedish! I tried to understand someone's conversation, but all I got was 'new.' Suddenly, everyone rushed to their seats. I looked at the doorway to see why they were so scared. A tall, thin lady with makeup walked into the room. Was she our teacher? I get why everyone was so terrified of her...
She walked up to me and said something in Swedish. It sounded something like, "Prator do svenska." I just said, "what."
She told me that it meant, 'do you speak Swedish?" And I said that I don't. She smiled and guided me to another room. She said, "This is a classroom for people who don't speak Swedish. Students of this classroom label it as 'international classrom.' Have fun!"
The teacher of the class greeted me. "Hello! This is where you learn Swedish and make friends. What is your name, your age and where are you from?"
I told him that it's Clara, I'm 13 and how I'm from Canada.
He said, "Beautiful name! Now, lets go around the whole class and say our names, ages and where we are from!"
"Chloe, 14 from South America."
"Sarah, 17 from New York."
"Daphne, 12 from Australia."
"Haru, 16 from Japan."
"Joey, 14 from Canada."
"Katie, 13 from Germany."
"Astrid, 26 from Sweden. I help out teaching."
"Paul, 15 from Scotland."
The teacher said, "very nice introductions! And yes, Astrid will be helping us, Clara."
I smiled. This class seems cool! A few members from the class came up to me and said that this class allowed some of the former students to speak fluent Swedish. Sarah said she could write a whole essay in Swedish. But one student sparked my interest the most. That was Joey.
I walked over to him and said that we were both from Canada. He looked up from his phone and said he already knew. He then went back to playing Subway Surfers. Jeez. I was just trying to be nice.
I walked back to my desk. Katie and Daphne walked up to me. Daphne said, "Welcome to the 'supposed to be in 8th grade group.'" I laughed. "I mean, we are 12 and 13, but isn't it a bit late in the year? I thought you were in 7th grade," I said.
Daphne smiled.
"Clara, this is a middle school - high school. Plus, it's only December 20th. My birthday is on the 31st. I actually was pretty early, despite what my birthday date suggests. I was supposed to be born on January 2nd, 2010. But I made it to 2009."
I looked surprised. "Oh wow. So your birthday is really late, but it's actually early?"
Katie and Daphne laughed. "Yep!"
I went back over to Joey's desk with newfound confidence. He groaned. "Fine, I'll be your friend."
Did I REALLY want to be friends with someone as rude as him? Plus, he's not even in the 'supposed to be in 8th grade' club. But I guess We have to deal with him.
Joey and I talked a little bit. He then wanted me to be his best friend. I said sure. Maybe this new school wasn't so bad.
