Chrissy organized her swim locker with her bag on one hook, her towel on another and her clothes on the last.
"So, this guy actually accepted my dinner invite." Anita, a fellow swim team member, was deeply engrossed in telling Chrissy a story, "Come's to my house and my dad beats me to the door, 'A bit skinny' he says." Anita burst into laughter.
Chrissy smiled good naturedly, "What did your mom think?"
"Oh she loves him! He had seconds of her fish curry and raved about how good the rice was!"
"Wow, so it well?"
"Yes! My mom sent him home with a basket of let overs, and he still talked to me the next day!" Anita giggled again.
Chrissy smiled, wondering how a first meeting between Hudson and her mom would go down.
"I'm here!" Jen announced to the bustling change room. "You won't believe it, but I nailed my math test this week." she bragged as she shook her bag out and dumped her things onto the floor.
"Your right!" Anita razzed, "I don't believe you!"
Chrissy smirked, "I'm with her. Since when do you nail math tests?"
Jen rolled her eyes indignantly, "Ok, so, I don't have my marks back yet, but...." She grinned, "I feel pretty good about it."
Anita laughed loudly, she did everything loudly, "that's what you said about your world religion presentation!"
"Yeah! A C isn't awful!" Jen defended, "We can't all be like Chrissy and plan our assignments three weeks in advance!"
"It's better then coming up with something morning of." Chrissy pointed out cheekily.
Jen merely rolled her eyes as she and Anita proceeded to change into their swim gear.
"Ok, so why do you feel so good about the test?" Anita asked, she went to a private school and only knew Chrissy and Jen through the swim team.
"I landed a study buddy who averages in A's!" Jen bragged with a self-satisfied smile.
"Who is it?"
"This guy, Hudson- he invited me over to study the night before- he had a load of class notes! And I don't know half of what he was talking-"
"Hudson invited you over?" Chrissy interrupted, her stomach doing a flip.
"Yeah, on Wednesday night."
"Who's Hudson? Is he attractive or just a total nerd?" Anita asked greedy for details.
Chrissy ignored her, "Hudson invited you over- and you didn't tell me!?"
"Yeah." Jen shrugged.
"On Wednesday night?" Chrissy pressed, a rare emotion heating her face, "The night I texted you!?"
"Yeah, and I said I was busy! I was studying!"
"What's going on?" Anita tried to butt in.
"Jen! You should have told me."
"It's not a big deal!"
"Guys?" Anita tried again, "Class will be starting soon, sooo..." the other team members had nearly all left.
"Not a big deal!? Hudson thought he was inviting me over- not you! And because you didn't tell me, I was stuck going to see a movie with your boyfriend! A boyfriend you didn't tell me about." Chrissy was near yelling, tears springing to her eyes over the whole situation.
"Ok, I'm out!" Anita said backing away, leaving the two doppelgangers alone in the changeroom.
Jen rolled her eyes, "I said I was sorry for not telling you we were dating- wait!" her face froze, "You went to a movie with him!?"
Chrissy slammed her locker shut, "Yeah, he asked if I would go, I said yes, assuming you would want to go, but then you said you were busy!"
"I didn't know what you meant! So you just went on a movie date with my boyfriend!?"
"Yeah, and it sucked! I wanted to see the movie, but he kept trying to make a move on me."
Jen's jaw dropped in disgust.
Chrissy's anger faded, "You did the same thing with Hudson." She defended weakly.
"That's totally different! We were studying, not cuddling in a movie theater!"
"You still should have told me." Chrissy argued and began walking towards the pool door. "And we weren't cuddling! As if I would pretend to like him!"
"I don't want you to pretend to like him! I don't want you to go near him!" Jen was now yelling, her voice echoing against the tile walls and floors.
"Seriously- your jealous?" Chrissy spun about, the thought of Tom trying to slide his arm around her shoulders at the movie made her feel gross inside.
"Yeah, and you can forget me pretending to be nice to Hudson!" Jen threatened.
"Good!"
"He doesn't even seem all that interested in you anyway!" Jen blew past her into the pool room.
Chrissy stood rooted to the spot, tears spilling out, Jen's last words leaving a sting.
With a deep shuddering breath, she followed Jen. She spent the lesson doing her best to ignore her and her scathing glares, all the while Anita and the rest of the team tried to pretend nothing was wrong.
Chrissy and Jen went home still fuming.
