Everything is so dark.

The grass beneath their bodies turning dark gray while a light fog blankets it and fills the air, dangerously resembling a wave in the deepest part of the ocean crashing into a helpless little ship that was just unfortunate enough to get caught there during a terrible, unforgiving storm. Everyone on board fighting to survive. But they're drowning. Slowly but surely, they'll lose the fight.

And Ruby felt like she's drowning.

Like all the air got sucked out of her poor lungs and the heavy tide is violently pushing her down, down, down. She tries to fight it, but the weight is too strong, like Neptune himself placed a hand on the crown of her head, shoving her further and further down so she'll meet the ocean's floor where so many poor unfortunate souls lie in the form of discarded skeletons in broken, forgotten, old vessels. She really tries, but there is no fighting it. Because she isn't an unfortunate little ship in the middle of the ocean. She is a cursed individual who is just waiting for a strike. Waiting for the clock to chime. Waiting for it to decide when her time comes. How she goes.

Max is trembling next to her, she can feel her body vibrating in fear through her hand that is holding onto her shoulder like her life depends on it. And it kind of does.

Ruby can't drown. Max needs her.

"What's going on?" Max's voice trembles like her body.

"I don't kno-" Ruby tries to reply, tries to keep her voice strong and firm, strong where Max can't be, but she gets interrupted.

"Max."

"Ruby."

They both turn their faces cautiously to the side, bodies clinging so close together that if they get any closer, bones may break. But that voice. That voice that echoes through the graveyard like it belongs to a siren, willing them to listen. Willing them to come closer so it can take their lives and sink back into the deep blue with content in it's heart. It wills them to look. It wills them to obey to it's unheard instructions through calling their names. The two girls shiver and automatically turn in the direction of the painfully familiar voice.

Steve has one arm draped on the driver's side window and taps his fingers impatiently as he looks directly at Ruby and Max. He moves his gaze from them to check his wrist watch.

"All right, it's been long enough." He pushes the door open and slams it back shut when he's out of the car, walking towards Billy's grave where the girls are still sitting.

"Steve, just give them some time." Lucas pleads gently from where he's sitting on the hood of the car.

"I have, all right, Sinclair? I'm calling it. If they want to get a lawyer, they can." Steve says, determination oozing from his words as he continues walking up the small hill, all while still looking at Lucas when he addresses him. He turns back around when there's no further argument and jogs, up until he reaches the girls.
