I've heard stories of the men going out into space, to a planet far away from Earth. I've seen it on the news, on posters, in newspapers, I've seen it all. Seeing the pay, glory, and respect of the men who went to this planet, I wished to join myself.
I went to the HQ of this company, their sign's name plastered above many of the houses on the surface world we spread out to not even thirty years before. In big yellow letters, it spelled "DEEP ROCK GALACTIC." Feeling the weight of luck needed, I felt deterred. I refused to take the loss of determination, so I went in, filled out the paperwork, and sent it in.
I came for the payout. I've heard stories of veterans being completely self-governing and rich. When they die, their children will be rich.
I felt it was pretty simple. This was until I was one of the lucky few to be selected for the program. We had to undergo twelve weeks of training for this job.
I selected the Driller classification when I went to sign up, as I was always the type of man who'd do the dirty work so no one else had to. I didn't expect such heavy, cutting-edge technology as I was given.
After I went through the training, I was one of the very few who didn't quit. This meant I was ready to finally see this planet everyone was fighting and dying on. The trained and I got ourselves ready for transportation. We were put onto an LSCS, and we were sent off to this planet.
"Hello, Hoxxes IV," I remember saying to myself upon seeing the oddly depressed-looking planet. It was all gray and rocky. The striking things about this place were that it was surrounded by rigs, and there was a huge piece of the planet blown off.
I was designated to Rig 097, and I met my mates there. We were just as nervous as the next. At least we have a full team together now, I thought, It should make things a lot better for us.
