Exploring

"Let's skip the history lesson till later. Care to dance, Miss Ellerby?"

"Sure, why not."

My heart pounds. I didn't think she'd actually say yes!

I look down and see the plastic water bottle still in Amanda's hand. I grab it, getting my fingers tangled in hers, and say, "Best to keep that out of sight. Judging by the clothes these people are wearing, I'm pretty sure plastic wasn't even invented yet."

Amanda smiles at me, then leans in for the dance. Without thinking, I slip my arms around her waist and she puts her hands on my upper arms. I'm not sure how to really dance, but we just turn in circles, and that seems to cut it.

Amanda leans in closer to whisper, "I hope whatever we look like now that we're dressed well enough."

I look around. "No one is pointing at us and laughing, so we must be okay. Unless they're just being polite and we're really farm kids dressed in overalls." I crack a smile.

Amanda laughs. "We'll, its safe to say we're not cows anymore."

With that, conversation ends, and I lead her across the dance floor. This moment, everything about it, is perfect. I can feel Amanda's heartbeat, her breath, every noise she makes. I want so badly to kiss her again, but I know she's not ready for it, so I wait.

Almost in response to my thoughts, she shivers and pills closer to me. I want to melt, to pause this moment and keep it forever.

Instead, I say, "Don't worry. We'll be okay."

She nods in my chest and breaths in and out deeply. I wait, knowing she's going to want to stop dancing soon, and go exploring.

Sure enough, a second later she suggests going exploring. And I don't hesitate. I grab her hand and lead her off into the unknown.
