Kay and Faith sneaked out of the clearing.
"How do we get out? The fences are plainly too high for us to climb over," Faith said, her heart sinking, "maybe we shouldn't have done this in the first place. Maybe we should just turn back."
Kay frowned. "No. We can't give up so easily. Isn't your name Faith? Shouldn't you have faith in this?"
"Don't threaten me using my name."
"I'm not threatening you. I'm just wondering why you aren't like your name."
Faith balled up her fists. "Fine."
"Anyway, the fence over there is loose at the bottom. We can escape by crawling under. It should be big enough for us," Kay said, heading there, not looking over to see if Faith followed.
Just as they were about to crawl under the loose fence, Faith heard a faint sound of footsteps- coming closer to the orphanage- and closer- before fading away, followed by a small, frightened, faint wailing sound. Faith stopped and looked back uncertainly.
"What are you waiting for?" Kay hissed impatiently behind her.
"Shh... I hear something- or someone," Faith whispered.
"What do you mean? Is it a night-watcher?" Kay muttered, now worried.
"No... Its... I think it's a baby..." Faith whispered back and to Kay's horror, stood up and began walking towards the direction of the cries.
Kay made a frustrated noise and crawled back to his feet, standing up. "It's none of our business. We need to get away remember? That is our main objective."
Faith turned back. "That's the point. We are escaping from this hellhole. Away from all its pain and suffering. If we leave the baby behind, we are letting it go, we are leaving it for the orphanage to 'care'. We should take the poor thing along with us. It's the right thing to do."
Kay had no choice but to follow Faith.
In front of the gate, was the bundle of torn pink blankets. Snuggled right inside, was in fact not a baby, but a female toddler of probably two years. Faith ran to the loose fence and crawled under before making her way to the tot. Kay could only sigh and followed suit.
Faith picked the bundle of blankets up gingerly. The toddler stopped wailing and looked at her. Faith knelt down to read the note that had fallen on the ground.
It contained only two sentences that were tear-stained:
Please take good care of my baby girl. I am in too much poverty to care for her.
"Well, if we're gonna keep her, she's gotta have a name," Kay said stiffly, not really elated that they were going to have an extra mouth to feed along the way.
"Meredith," said Faith happily, "come on Kay, it's time for Scarborough."
Are you going to Scarborough Fair
A faint breeze whispered past...
