Chapter Fourteen

The Surprise

The sound of the phone ringing off the hook filled the house. It had been ringing most of the morning, however, Reine was so tired she slept through most of it. A groan escaped the teenager's lips as she opened one eye and looked at the clock on her bedside table. It was only eight-thirty in the morning. Reine sat up in bed, letting the covers fall away as she attempted to gather herself. They had gotten home pretty late last night. And when they arrived home, Bill and Sookie got into it. Sook decided to end whatever was going on between them.

Reine could understand why her sister wanted to end things. However, that didn't change the fact that she felt sorry for Bill. He seemed to really care for Sookie.

Reine slid out of bed and went to get dressed for the day. She grabbed a soft pink camisole top and a pair of light blue ripped jeans from her closet. And finally added a pair of nude ballet flats to finish the outfit. Next, Rae went to the bathroom and brushed her teeth and hair. Once she was finished, she made her way downstairs.

As she descended the stairs, the sound of the phone continued to fill the house. It was getting on her nerves. "All right! Same to you! Bye now!" Rae heard her grandmother say. Her brows drew together as she made her way into the kitchen. "Phone's been ringin' an awful lot this morning." The teenager commented as she went to take a seat at the table.

Adele had a bright smile on her lips when she saw her granddaughter. "Good mornin' honey! Happy birthday!" The old woman said as she placed a pan of eggs on the table. She turned to grab a glass from the cabinet and poured Rae some orange juice. "Do you have any plans for today?"

"Actually, Gran. I forgot today was my birthday. So much has been goin' on. I haven't had much time to think about it." Rae admitted as she went to take a drink of orange juice.

"Well, I'm sure something special will happen today. It always does on one's birthday." Adele told her granddaughter with a knowing smile.

Sookie cleared her throat as she stabbed some scrambled eggs on her plate. "So why has the phone been ringin' so much today?" The young woman changed the subject before her grandmother slipped up about the surprise for her sister.

"Oh! Everyone is excited about meetin' the town vampire tonight." Gran said as she began making toast for Reine. "I didn't hear you two come in last night."

"You went to bed early." Sookie told her grandmother.

"You didn't want to hear us come in." Reine said under her breath.

"Well..." Adele began as she returned to the stove. "I just thought I'd give Sookie and Mr. Compton, a little privacy, is all."

"Am I really that much of a lost cause you gotta pin all your hopes for me on a vampire?" Sookie asked her grandmother as she returned to the table with the phone in her hand.

"But he really seems like a very nice man." Adele murmured.

"Well, he's not." Sookie spat out the words.

"He's not nice? Adele questioned.

"Or a man." Sookie informed her grandmother.

"Sookie!" Reine couldn't believe her sister just said those words. "That's not true. He's still a man, even though he's a vampire."

"No, he's not, Rae." Sook shot back.

"He is! If there aren't male or female vampires, then I'm sure that you find Pam just as attractive as you find Bill."

"Ew, no." Sookie scrunched up her nose at the thought.

"That's my point. You are a straight female, and you are attracted to a male vampire. There isn't anything wrong with that. But I don't want to hear you say that he isn't a man again, because that isn't fair to Bill." Reine lectured as she picked up some scrambled eggs with her fork. "We don't know how he was turned, Sookie. It could have been against his wishes." Once Reine made her point she took a bite of the eggs. From the corner of her eye, she could see her Gran with a proud smile on her lips.

"Did you two have a fight?" Adele inquired, hoping the subject change would deter her granddaughters from further argument.

"No. Kinda. I don't think Bill and I have very much in common. He doesn't think like we do, he doesn't feel the way we do, if he... feels at all." Sookie said the last bit quietly hoping her sister wouldn't hear. However, as soon as the words left her lips Rae gave her one of her famous glares. Sookie ignored her sister as she took a bite of sausage. She couldn't help it that she didn't think he had the same sort of feelings that a human did.

"Well, I know that, if I had a chance to know somebody who'd experienced the world differently, I'd see it as a blessing and not somethin' to be scared of. Or hate." Gran told the young woman.

"I don't hate him. I just don't want to be his girlfriend. As Sookie spoke the phone started ringing again. When her Gran didn't answer her brow rose. "Uh... the phone's ringin'.

"Umm... machine'll pick it up." Adele told her granddaughter. The three women fell silent as the phone continued to ring. Both Sookie and Reine finished their breakfast without saying another word about vampires or relationships.

A couple hours after breakfast was finished, Reine had gone to her room to read while Sookie stood outside the closed door to her sister's bedroom. She attempted to come up with something believable that would make Reine come to Merlotte's. Sookie knocked on the bedroom door, "Come in!" She heard her sister say from the other side of the door. Sook pushed open the door and smiled softly. Rae was on her stomach, feet in the air as she turned the pages of her book. "Hey... um... Sam called. He was wondering if you could come in today for work. They're busier than usual."

"Oh..." Rae sat up as she closed her book. "Why didn't he call me?" It was her day off, she made sure to take the day off a few weeks ago. She really didn't want to work on her birthday.

"I don't know." Sook shrugged. "He just wanted to know if I would bring you in for back up."

"I mean... I guess. Let me get changed."

Sookie nodded as she shut the door. "I'll be downstairs." She told her sister before descending the stairs. As she reached the last step her Gran was waiting for her at the bottom.

"Did she believe it?" Adele questioned the young woman.

"I think so. She's gettin' changed now." Sookie replied. "Sam'll be by to pick you up after we get to Merlotte's."

"Alright." Adele smiled and hurried off to fix her hair. She wanted to look her best for the surprise party. The party had been in the works for a few weeks now. There would be plenty of food, music, and lot's of people with gifts. Sam, Sookie, Jason, and she had made sure to invite all of Reine's close friends. Adele wanted the party to be perfect! It wasn't every day that you turned eighteen.

Reine hurried down the stairs as she pulled her hair back into a ponytail. "All ready to go?" Sookie asked her sister.

"Yep, let's go." Reine replied as Sookie grabbed her purse and keys. The two headed out to the car and jumped inside. It wasn't long before they were peeling out of the driveway and heading down the road to Merlotte's.
