It was mid-November of 1998. Rain had been coming down steadily for the latter half of the day. Around 6pm, Sister Imperator took the old Buick out to smoke her nightly cigarette. She usually takes a walk down to the lake to indulge, but she drove due to the rain. She decided to smoke an extra, so she could enjoy the weather for a bit longer. Papa Nihil was napping on the couch, anyways.
It had been a long day. The church was growing stagnant, and she knew it. Papa Nihil had been out sick for a while. Actually, she was scared he wasn't going to make it for a little bit. Catching pmeumonia after his lung collapsed last year? It seemed like it might be a death sentence. Somehow, he pulled through. She didn't want to overwhelm him with the pressures of the growing need of their message getting out. Not with his body so compromised. That oxygen tank at his hip is a constant reminder of his fragility, and that keeps her from talking about it even when she does try to bring it up. Sister Imperator doesn't have many weak spots, but Papa has always been her achilles heel. If she were to lose him, she'd fall apart faster than the church would.
That being said, the Church is in need of a new leader. But Papa Nihil is so stubborn. He insists he can keep the church going. It's silly, given that he has three sons, all of whom are ready. At least, that's what Sister Imperator thinks. None of the boys really show great enthusiasm about taking over. Not that they don't want to, but one might think they'd show some initiation with how sick their father has been.
Sister Imperator puts out her cigarette and places it back in the carton. She takes a deep breath and puts her seatbelt back on. She rolls her window back up, and heads back up the road. Driving away from the lake, she decides to leave her worries there for the night. Papa Nihil needs her to take care of him. He doesn't need this extra weight on his shoulders.
She pulls the car around to the side of the church, and she sees something dash into the woods.
"Damned deer." she mutters. The deer have trampled and munched on her flowers ever since the church had been built here 4 years ago. That's the price of building in the middle of the woods.
Sister steps out of the car and makes her way to the front doors of the Church, the keys jangling with each step. She turns the corner, facing the giant wooden doors. Her pant leg brushes against something. She looks down, and sees a child. An infant, in a carrier.
"Oh my, Satan. What have we here?" Sister says loudly. She peers back around the corners of the Church, hoping to see a mother, or a father, or literally anyone else around. No such luck. "Hello?" she calls. Nothing. She bends down and picks up the carrier. As she pulls open the gigantic doors, she wonders what in the hell she's supposed to do with an infant child. A girl, it seems. Sister Imperator closes the doors behind her and heads inside.
