Today was the last day of summer vacation, and tomorrow I start my new school. I had recently gotten accepted into Mrs. Flounders Academy for the gifted. When I got my letter I was very surprised. It was very hard to get into and I didn't even apply but I wasn't going to complain. Once we sent the confirmation letter back stating that I would be delighted to attend, they sent my school supplies and uniforms as well as my plane ticket. After waiting impatiently all summer, the day finally arrived. My alarm went off promptly at seven Am. My flight didn't leave until one o'clock that afternoon but I was too excited and nervous to sleep any later. I reached over and shut off my alarm. Stifling a yawn I sat up and looked out my window. The sun was already up and the birds were singing. I got up and walked over to my vanity and looked in the mirror. I had long red hair, bright green eyes, and freckles everywhere. I grabbed my brush and pulled my hair into a high ponytail. When I had finished I walked into the hall and ran down the stairs as fast as I could toward the kitchen. "Scout!" My mom yelled, "How many times do I have to tell you not to run down the stairs? You sound like a herd of Elephants and grab the mail on your way in" Rolling my eyes I grabbed the mail from in front of the door and walked into the kitchen. Mom already had breakfast done. She made scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, and waffles, all of which were my favorite. Dad was sitting at the table reading the newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee. He looked up as I entered the room. "Good morning sweetheart", he said with a smile. " Good morning Dad." "Are you ready for today?" Mom asked as she poured me a glass of Apple juice. “I guess,” I said nervously, “I don’t know if I'm more scared or nervous. On one hand, I'm going to an amazing school, on the other, I'm going to be so far away and I won't be able to see you guys for a year.” “I understand sweetheart, but I believe you will have an amazing time.” my mom said while kissing me gently on my head. “Now hurry and finish eating so you can finish getting ready to go. we have to leave in an hour to make it to the airport on time.” As soon as I was done eating I ran upstairs to get ready. I grabbed the clothes that I had laid out the aforesaid night. I decided to wear my favorite pair of jeans with a light jacket and tennis shoes. After getting dressed I walked across the hall to the bathroom to brush my teeth. When I was finished, I grabbed my toothbrush, toothpaste, and hair ties and put them in my bag. I gathered all my portable chargers, wall plugins, charging cords, headphones, and books in my backpack so that I would have them on the plane with me I then finished packing some spare clothes and blankets into my suitcase Just as I was zipping up my suitcase mom called to me from the bottom of the stairs, “Scout, it's time to go.” “Coming mom,” I called back to her. I grabbed bags, took on the last look at my room, and shut the door. As I was saying goodbye to dad, mom put my bags in the car. ‘Goodbye kiddo,” he said while pulling me in for a long hug,” Don't forget to let us know the moment you get there alright.” “I will dad,” I said as I hugged him tightly. After hugging for what felt like an eternity he finally let go. l walked slowly to the car and got in the front seat as my mom was pulling out of the driveway I looked back at the house one more time as it would be the last time I saw it for a year. The drive to the airport was about two hours. the whole way their mom talked about the fact I would be spending a year away from home, and that it would be turning seventeen while I’ll be there. When we arrived at the airport we parked and walked in to get checked in. We got my suitcase tagged and ready for it to be put on the plane, then we worked our way to my gate. As we got to the security checkpoint they informed my mom that since she didn't have a ticket she would not be able to go past this point. She pulled me in for a big hug. “Now you let me know the moment you arrive. And don't forget to message me every day so that we know that you're ok.” “I will mom,” I said as I hugged her back. I turned and walked through security. I waited for my bag to come on the conveyor, then went to find a seat to wait to board the plane. At first, I thought I was the first one there until I saw a figure hunched over in a chair to the right. I leaned down to try to see the face but right as I saw a glimpse of his face I ran into a pole. “Oof,” I yelled out, stumbling back a couple of steps. The guy sitting down looked up and took his hood off. “You ok?” he asked looking concerned. “Yea,” I said, rubbing my head, “I’m used to it. I’m a pretty clumsy person. I run into things all the time.” “I can see that,” he said while laughing. Just then we heard a commotion behind us, several kids were walking toward us. Altogether there were twelve kids. We all stood around staring at each other. Some of them were talking with each other which led me to believe that they knew each other. Just as I was about to burst from the tension in the air, the door to the left that led to the plane opened up. Standing in a suit and tie was a tall man. “Hello everyone,” he said with a smile on his face, “I hope you all are as excited as I am. Now It’s time to go, so please grab your bags and form a single file line so that we can load up as quickly as possible.” There was a rustling of bags as everyone grabbed their bags and headed toward the door. As I approached the door, I saw a woman with a clipboard. She asked each person their name before allowing them to board the plane. When it was my turn she smiled at me politely and said, “Please state your name.” “Umm…Scout Richards,” I managed to squeak out. “Alright honey, you're all good please go find a seat.” I thanked the lady and walked onto the plane to find a seat. To my surprise, there were only twelve seats on the plane. Each seat had a footrest, a tv, and a little privacy door. I decided on a seat about midway to the back. I put my back in the compartment above my head and sat down. Looking around at all the other kids it was clear that I was correct to assume that many of them knew each other. Soon the plane was filled with talking and laughter. I was about to put my door up when the boy I saw earlier called out to me. “Hey, your name is Scout right?” “Yea.” “Well hi, I'm Ryker. Nice to meet you. Do you mind if I sit here?” he said pointing to the seat across from mine. I shook my head, so he put his bag in the overhead compartment and sat down. “Are you excited to go to this school?” he asked. “I'm not so much excited as I am nervous.” “yea same here, hey o you know how we got accepted? My parents never sent any applications to this school.” “Same. I'm hoping when we arrive we will be told how we got accepted.” The moment I finished speaking, the lady that greeted us at the entrance of the plane started talking. “ Welcome everyone, I am so glad that all of you could join us.” She then proceeded to go over all of the safety procedures of the plane. “If you are hungry or need a drink please push the red button on the remote on your left. T.V. guides are in the pocket on the right side of your chair, along with the remote for it. if you have any other questions just push the green button above your seats. Now please buckle your seatbelts and sit tight. We will be leaving shortly.” As she finished speaking she disappeared behind the curtain at the front of the plane. Ryker looked back at me, “So how old are you?” I looked at him like he was crazy. “Why would I tell you that It’s personal.” “Well I'm 16,” he replied with a smirk and while looking around he continued, “and everyone looks to be around the same age.” Ok, that’s a fair point,” I said laughing, “I’m 16 as well.” We continued talking with each other till long after the plane took off. About an hour after we were in the air I was getting tired so as I listened to the endless chatter that was floating about the plane I leaned my chair back and closed my eyes.
