02 || "drowning humans don't laugh underwater." || 30K special!!

shinobu let her head fall onto the piles of textbooks as she screamed into them.

a sigh.

"i've told you, shinobu-chan. it's just like kanae said, you should just get a tutor if you're struggling this much."

"mitsuri-san, i'm fine. i'm alright. just.. just believe in me, okay? i'll find a way to get back on track with all of my classes."

mitsuri didn't wait for shinobu to continue.

"i'm not saying i don't believe in you. of course i believe in you, shinobu-chan! i believe that you can get through all of these classes.. with or without a tutor."

shinobu continued to let her head sink into the ocean of boring old pages. this year, she had tried to join as many new clubs and courses as possible.

she'd gained a good reputation of finishing all her assignments before their due dates, and at an extremely impressive standard. but this month, all her grades had dropped by a lot.

this was what happened when you took a few days off for a break. when you went out partying for a change. shinobu would just have to pay the consequences of letting her 'all studying, no fun' slide.

shinobu shot up.

"mitsuri-chan, what was the homework assignment for health class again?"

"hm? i think it was.. making an educational video that teaches you the basics of how to save a drowning person" (i spelt 'person' wrong, and it autocorrected to 'kerosene..' 'drowning kerosene.')

shinobu sprang up, bolting toward the wardrobes, and started rummaging through the piles of messes, startling mitsuri.

she fished out her black and purple swimming suit that mitsuri and herself had gotten a few days prior on a shopping spree, just because it matched her hair colour.

shinobu stuffed her swim suit into a small bag, chucking her bottle in too.

"come on, mitsuri-san. hurry up. let's film the video so that i'll at least have one of my assignments completed."

shinobu watched as mitsuri clicked the red start button on her phone's camera.

she, mitsuri, andaAoi had decided to relocate to the outdoor pool, as it was more quiet, and the sun was out, apart from a few darkened clouds.

light beamed across the small ripples in the clear pool, shining into shinobu's eyes. afternoon swimming classes that were presumably coached by tomioka-sensei finished about half an hour ago, leaving the pool to themselves.

the three stood by the pool's edge, shivering from the cool breeze.

shinobu watched as mitsuri-san flicked her a thumbs-up, indicating her 's and aoi's queue. she plunged into the pool at the same time as aoi. shinobu dropped her head beneath the water's surface, flailing her arms about.

"when you see someone nearby in immediate danger, try releasing any weight, like shoes or bags." mitsuri said.

aoi ripped off the flippers on shinobu's feet dramatically, making shinobu snort beneath the water, sending a flurry of bubbles up.

"the next step is to try elevate the drowning person, and to take take the person out of the water. if you can see people nearby, hold up your hands to alert a lifeguard." mitsuri continued.

aoi proceeded to grab hold of shinobu's arm, lifting her up in one mighty heave, and dragging her out of the water, leaning her by the pool's side.

"one of the most important steps is to check if the person still breathing."

"hen, try to remove the person's cold, wet clothes, or apply warmth to their body."

"after this, contact emergency numbers after this, and alert professionals right away." mitsuri finished, as aoi mimicked dialling a number on an invisible phone, putting it to her ear.

the sound of the end of the recording broke the act, sending the girls into a spiraling laughter.

"you've missed a step." an uninterested voice said.

the laughter died down immediately, as the three turned to see tomioka-sensei sitting on a bench by the door. he hadn't yet changed out of his blue and white work uniform.

"if the person is not breathing, then what happens?" tomioka-sensei glared at each of the girls expectantly, narrowing his eyes on shinobu. he gave them no time to answer, as his answer loaded out. "you must then perform CPR on them."

shinobu, aoi, and mitsuri exchanged an embarrassed look. they'd forgotten the most important and easiest to remember step in their video, and tomioka-sensei witnessed all of it.

"and kocho, drowning humans don't laugh underwater. you missed our detention session. you are to come to the gym everyday next week after class." he said, already turning away.

shinobu gasped and slapped a hand to her lips, as she remembered exactly what she was supposed to be doing, instead of having fun in the pool with her friends.

how was she going to catch up with all of her classes now?
