minerva sat beside the quiet, sickly boy, watching him carefully. "you can stay with me. i have a shed!" she told him, suddenly beaming with excitement.
jacques examined his ragged clothes, before looking back up at the kind girl. "you'd do that?" he asked. his green eyes sparked with hope as he gazed upon his friend's blushing face.
"it's the least i can do, you did save me from drowning after all." minerva replied, giggling softly to herself. "come on let's go." she said, an outstretched hand.
jacques was hesitant, but he got up. he decided not to take her hand. stuffing his hands in his pocket he followed her. "no problem." he said. that was a lie, saving her was a struggle. he could remember how the cold water tightened his chest, and caused his body to ache down to the bone.
"so tell me more about your time in england." minerva asked, clearly intrigued. she had never seen something as peculiar as this happen before. it was incomprehensible to think the english would capture a young boy, just to spite france.
"it was awful. i was constantly poked with needles, and thrown around. often chained up." he said, whilst trying his hardest to show now emotions. even then a small tear slipped down his cheek, that he quickly wiped away. minerva noticed the dirt all over his face, cleaning it with the apron she had on.
"is that better?" she asked, hoping he'd say yes. she didn't care that she had soiled her white apron.
"yes." jacques replied, smiling softly.
