Cuphead sighed. After saving the Inkwell Isles, he expected more praise and less, well, chores. Sure, he could bring up all the compassion needed for the Elder Kettle, and do chores for him, but that didn't make it any more fun. It was almost 4 o'clock.
"Mugs, let's take a break. I'm tired."
Cuphead spoke. Mugman stopped whatever he was doing and turned to face his porcelain brother.
"Sure, good idea! Let's ask Elder Kettle."
Not much convincing was needed for Elder Kettle to agree. The boys were ready to run out the door when Elder Kettle stopped them and said:
"Back before dinner, alright? Leave the rest of the chores for tomorrow, you boys deserve some time for yourselves. Although I have one more thing to tell you."
Cuphead and Mugman raised their eyebrows in curiosity.
"What is it?"
Cuphead asked. Elder Kettle shifted his feet, seemingly uncomfortable.
"Erm, the Root Pack asked me to deliver them some supplies for their garden. Could you please pass them on your way and give them those? Oh, and be polite to them! You know Chauncey, he's not the gentlest of all."
Mugman swallowed. They had experienced that plenty during their fights, and although a load of apologies had washed over them, they still didn't exactly... trust the Root Pack. Especially Chauncey. He had a rough personality, whether it be in a fight or in a conversation. But, polite as the boys were, they couldn't say no.
Time flew by on the way there, as the two brothers found joy in each other's company. They eventually arrived, nicely on time. They felt the ground vibrating after they called for Chauncey, knowing it was him digging through the earth and moving towards them. Mugman swallowed. Visiting the Root Pack was always stressful. Cuphead didn't seem to worry too much about it though. Mugman's bubble did burst when cuphead poked him and coughed.
"He's talking to you, Mugs."
Mugman blinked his train of thought away.
"Eh? Sorry, I wasn't paying attention."
Chauncey grinned, whether it was intentional to look a tad creepy or not, but he let out a giggle when he saw Mugman's confused expression.
"Don't you worry your head, little mug. Thank you boys for the supplies. Come in, I have some tea prepared for you two."
The cups' mouths fell open. Since when was Chauncey this friendly? And... tea?
"Uhh, sure..."
Cuphead muttered. Chauncey noticed their surprised expressions and clarified things with a laugh.
"No need to be so tense, boys. Elder Kettle told me how much stress you've been in since your incident with the Devil. And there's gotta be a way to repay you boys for what you've done for all of Inkwell Isles! Consider this a day off."
Surprised to say the least, the brothers sat down for a cup of tea. Cuphead soon started chattering about the Devil knows what, and Mugman and Chauncey listened patiently. When Cuphead was chatted out, Chauncey stood up.
"Let's get you boys to the garden. There's something I need to show you."
Cuphead and Mugman followed him into the humble yet beautiful garden. The three of them sat down on the grass, a warm summer breeze soothing the brothers into relaxing a bit.
"So what did you want to show us?"
Cuphead asked. Chauncey grinned again.
"Oh I'll show you alright. It's my reward for you two."
