I was sitting in the chair when the doorbell rang. I picked up the two-and-a-half year old boy, Zero, and walked down the hall to the front door.
I cracked open the door, looking through the haze of rain. I just barely caught sight of a shadow dissapearing around a building.
Then a small cry caught my attention, making me look down. Sitting on the steps is a baby in a basket. A note on the side.
Dear Skarlet,
This baby's name is Sonya. She is two months old. You may only be twelve, but you can take care of her.
" Great, just great." I muttered, " I'm a twelve year old taking care of babies, and living in a abandoned house."
I looked at the baby again. Her blanket had fallen off her head, showing two huge, blue eyes.
I looked at the baby I was already holding, " Well Zero, looks like you have a friend."
He just grinned, showing his tiny teeth. I sighed and picked Sonya up, Zero looked at her. Then leaned over and tapped her hand. Why, I don't know.
I walked down the hall and up the stairs to our bedroom.
"Looks like you'll have to share a crib, for now." I said.
I sat Sonya down, and she started to cry. Then I sat Zero down. I ran down the stairs, through the hall, and into the first door on the right.
In the kitchen, I went to the counter and made Sonya a bottle of formula. As I did that I wondered if my hair was long enough to sell yet, and how many jobs I'd have to get to pay off the water bill.
Also, if the lady would let me pay it off a little at a time, like she did last month. Or if the store would have formula in yet.
When I got back in our room I saw that Zero had crawled over to Sonya, and was laying beside her. Her cries had stopped. I sighed, then went back down stairs, to the third doorway on the left, the living room.
The room only had one chair, a couch, and a small fireplace. I walked over to the fireplace and set the bottle on the halter. Then took the iron bucket the store owner had gave me, and filled it with a few coals. Then went to our room, set it down, and went to sleep.
