↻◁ II ▷ ↺"The world is quiet here," a calm voice belonging to you said. You found yourself repeating the phrase over and over again in your mind; this was the first time you had actually said those four words.
You set your book down, something by Melville, and looked up at the hospital bed. It's not like you were able to read anymore, anyway, you thought. You sighed softly, your eyes trailing down to the floor and your hands clasping between your thighs.
"It's funny," you chuckled dryly, still not managing to meet the shut eyes of the patient. "When I first read that in a book- something by Snicket- I didn't understand it."
After a while of silence, you finally looked up at the patient. You weren't exactly sure what to expect, but you kind of hoped his eyes would be opened. You would hug him and laugh and cry and do everything you had dreamed of since the attack. But alas, his eyes were still shut like they had been for the last eight months.
Everyone else had given up on your boyfriend, Eugene, about a month after the attack. Tyler, Xavier and Enid were the first ones to stop showing up (about a week after). Then Wednesday eventually gave up -a month after her friends- and not long after that his parents stopped showing up. You couldn't really blame them, it hurt everyone to see Eugene so. . . lifeless.
You felt tears brim your eyes -you weren't sure why- but ignored them. "I understand what it means now," you said, warm tears running down your cheeks.
You sniffled, wiping the tears away -which was useless, as more just left your eyes- and looked up at Eugene again. You thought for a moment before standing, moving next to Eugene.
The covers were cold, making you even colder, but you didn't care. You lay beside Eugene, tears streaming down your face. Your eyes eventually closed, a wave of exhaustion flowing through you before sleep overcame your need to hold Eugene.
Birds chirped and laughter echoed through the hospital hallway as the sun beamed through the white curtains. The smell of pancakes and honey finally woke you up, your eyes fluttering open and a yawn leaving your lips. You groaned softly, wiping your eyes before sitting up and leaning your head on your pillow.
You turned to your unconscious boyfriend, but was surprised to see him gone. Replacing him was a small tray consisting of breakfast food correlating to bees. You furrowed your eyebrows, your eyes wide as you realized he was gone.
"What the hell?" you mumbled, seeing bee-shaped pancakes with honey draped over them. You blinked, wondering if you were in a dream.
You heard the loud creaaak!!- of a door, only to see a dark figure. You couldn't exactly make out who it was, only able to see the curls of their locs and part of a dress. Once the figure entered the light, your eyes went round and your mouth hung open a bit.
You struggled to form words, the figure thrilled to see you were awake. "Hi, Y/n," the figure said to you.
At that moment it all clicked. The curly locs and the dress you were able to make out (a hospital gown). It wasn't some random nurse wondering why you were in a patients room beside a tray of food - it was a familiar face you hadn't really seen in so long. Though you had seen him over the past months, he was never really there.
You got our of bed once realization hit you, leaping into his arms. Next thing you knew you were both on the floor; you had forgotten how strong you were compared to him.
"Oh my God you. . ." he spoke, his eyes meeting yours. At that moment you both realized the proximity between you - only a few centimeters or so. "You changed," you both chuckled.
"You didn't."
"Well, I was unconscious for eight months."
You went quiet, your smile ghosting your lips. "It felt like eternity," you said, sighing softly before standing up, pulling Eugene with you.
"Oh," Eugene said, grabbing the breakfast tray. "I made you some breakfast. You've been asleep for a while."
You chuckled at the bee-shaped pancakes, thanking him as he sat the tray on the bedside table.
"Well, the nurse is making me fill out a ton of papers, so I should go do that," Eugene said, moving towards the door.
You walked up to him, staring into his eyes. You then slapped his arm, "What the he-" he started, but you cut him off quickly.
"That's for getting yourself hurt," you said, folding your arms. Your expression quickly changed, a smile tugging your lips up. You leaned close to him, kissing his cheek. "I'm glad you're back.".
Eugene flushed red, smiling nervously and letting out a flustered chuckle. He soon left, almost tripping over nothing on his way out.
You smiled, sitting on the bed and glancing at the pancakes. You chuckled, "The world isn't so quiet anymore, huh. I get it now."
