I walk through the front door of my house, finally able to relax for the summer. My mother, Caroline, stands at the counter washing dishes to prepare dinner. I set my backpack on one of the stools, and greeted her even though she wasn't able to turn around.
"How was your day, Dear?" She turns off the steaming hot water and reaches for a rag to dry her hands.
"Good, um, can I go to Levi's house? He found a really cool old lab down the block." I tapped my foot silently on the kitchen tile, anticipating an answer.
"Levi? You haven't talked to him in a while. Just tell him I say hi, of course." I smile wide at her, now drying in between her fingers.
"Thanks, I'll text you!" I take my bag in my room quickly, and stumble quickly out the door as if I were drunk. Levi lived around the block in a richer but sketchy neighborhood. There were always drug addicts around, and multiple drive-bys happen almost every year. I knock on his door, and he opens quickly, also extremely excited to explore.
"Ready to see? I took a peek earlier and it looks like something straight out of a zombie movie." He does little excited hops as we walk to his back door to his yard.
"Absolutely!" I smile, and we hop his tall white fence like we always did to sneak out as kids. It seemed like we walked for twenty seconds because we were so excited to explore it; but sure enough, it was a huge old laboratory. Thick green vines grew all over, mushrooms with large stems poked out of the crevices where the building crumbled, and vandalism was everywhere.
"Wow." My mouth opened wide, and I stopped to admire how beautiful an abandoned building could be. Levi took his phone out and snapped a few pictures. After being absolutely bewildered, we decided to look inside. It almost looked like a hospital, but with glass test tubes everywhere. The moss and vines had found their ways inside as well, covering the floor, waiting for someone to trip. A mouse skittered across the floor and into a hole it called home in the wall. Levi and I decided to split up and search, and if we found anything to call one another. I took the basement of the lab. It reeked of mold and animal feces. A dark hallway exposed a double door at the end like in a horror hospital, but I wasn't scared one bit.
"This is kind of creepy." My voice and footsteps echoed as I talked to myself in the hall. It felt like a scare actor would pop out from around the corner saying BLAAAH or something in an attempt to scare me. I opened the doors quickly, and looked forward. A machine sat crooked against the back wall. A singular fluorescent light buzzed and flickered on the top of it, and vines grew around the sides. It looked like it would give up any minute, but I decided to take a closer look at it.
"If Doctor Who and The Walking Dead worked together on a movie, this would be it." I mumbled. Roaches scattered everywhere, and I grimaced, hoping none would be in my pants when I came home. I got close to the machine, and could make out the words on the top from the light.
Time Warp - Future
"A time machine?" I yelled, then slapping my hand over my mouth, hoping Levi didn't hear me. I looked around, and could still hear him on the second floor by the bugs and dust hitting the first floor. The door was wide open, almost as if it was telling me to step inside. My gut told me otherwise, trying to tell my brain to move my legs back upstairs and never speak of it again.
I told myself how good or bad it could be; the good being it would be almost the same, maybe flying cars and hoverboards, or the bad being the whole Earth would be crumbling down bit by bit until my corpse was just floating in space, never to be seen.
I took a bold move, and stepped in the time machine, shutting the door behind me. The walls went dark and silent, and for a moment I was convinced it was just a prop. Suddenly, a loud rumbling noise roared from the floor, and another blue light shined above. The whole thing went from a void to the inside of the sun in about two seconds. The machine shook wildly, and then it felt as if I were flying in a plane. The light was so bright, it was like I was being brought to the gates of Heaven now.
A crash came from below, then I tumbled to a stop. My head hit right on a light, and knocked me out cold to sleep.
