It's been three years since I last talked to Jason. When he ripped my heart out it was the last we ever talked. It hurt and it nearly killed me, but at this moment I'm out of college and in the army. My family were sad to see me go, but I needed this and so did my country. Everything changed me after he hurt me, and I wanted, and needed the change.
Felix understood and was happy for me. but there was an ultimatum. He had to get out of the mob business. I understand we are all family, but there could be other things to do. Everyone was more than welcome to stay, which included Angel, Preston, Andrew, Mina, and Felix. Others weren't ready to give up the business yet, but they understood so they are staying somewhere else far away from us. We still talk to them, and they are really happy.
Everything has changed and it's just going good. Well I thought everything was going good.
"Neela! Your commanding officer needs to speak to you." I salute and nod briskly as I walk away to go to my commanders post. We flew out last week to come to Afghan and so far nothing has happened but we've been patrolling dayly. Something was bound to happen because this town is known for it's activity with terrorists.
"Yes sir." I say with my feet apart and my hands behind my back with good posture. My commanding officer is six feet tall with broad shoulders and with muscles. His hair a dark brown and his light brown eyes to be highlighted by his features. When you're in his presence his power shows and it just makes you listen and do what he says.
"Soldier Santiago, it was brought to my attention that you're really good with weapons." He eyed me carefully as he stood a few feet away from me. I could see everything around him, so it was a good space to be in.
"Yes sir I am." I nod, falling into silence waiting for him to speak.
"May I ask how? No other man was able to get enough good shots as you, and also you took down every man you ever fought with. Training you passed with flying colors." He smiled calmly at me as he nodded me to speak.
"I've had training when I was sixteen sir till I arrived here sir." I said, my back hurting from this stiff posture.
"Well thankfully we have you." He smiled at me, which I smiled in return but fought.
"Thank you sir." It was supposedly illegal for women to go into infantry, but for me they made an exception because no one had made as a high score as mine, but this would all be under the radar for now. Hopefully this would allow me to be able to hepl future women into the infantry without trouble.
For the next few months they were tough. Men from both sides were being killed. We were doing a good job and taking the enemy down, but here's the thing these people aren't really our enemies. They are people just like us and they have families. Every time I take a life it hurts to know that I am the reason they will never go home to their families. I block it out so I don't cry at night, but this job tends to toughen you up in the emotion department. A job is a job, and I need to protect my country so in the future my kids, and their kids are worry free.
"Santiago you'll be hidden on top of the roof over there. There are men inside with guns, and bombs. We have information that they are planning on attacking one of the army bases a few towns over." Commander nodded at me.
