One by one, a tear followed another, adding to the ever growing puddle. A faint sniffle could be heard, but only to the sharpest of ears.

The young girl use her sleeve to try and wipe a tear, but only for her efforts to go in vain. She gently tucked her head back into her legs when she felt another surge of sobs.

She gasped for air in-between whines as she tilted her head to face the rickety window of the house. The clouds were dark and heavy with rain, making the day all the more dreary.

"Why...?" The girl hiccuped in between her words. "Why did you leave me?" She whispered quietly, knowing that the child she spoke too would never hear her.

The loud creaking of wood reached the girl's ears, and she immediately shot up and fixed her posture. Wiping the remaining tears off her face, and attempting to hide the sniffles.

The door to her small room flung open, revealing a tall and lean lady. Her cheek bones were quite pronounced, most likely due to the lack of food. Her bony hands were firmly wrapped around her waist, propping up her elbows. It gave her an intimidating stature, making the young girl cower.

"Harumi! Why are you still up here sulking?! You were supposed to be helping your cousin!" She nagged in her nasally voice.

Harumi quickly thought up a lie in the back of her head and put her acting skills to the test.

"I'm sorry aunt Meeva, but I've caught an awful cold-" she stopped abruptly to feign a cough. Thankfully, her nose was already running from all the crying she did earlier. "A-and I didn't want Duttle to catch it. I think it might be pneumonia!" She fibbed while grabbing a handkerchief near her bed and wiping her nose.

She then crawled into the creaky bed and fluffed the pillow on it.

Meeva stood there with a peeved face. She searched for any possible excuse to rat the girl out, but as of now, couldn't find any.

"W-well, maybe if you weren't living in such a mess, you wouldn't have caught it!" She yelled.

The irony in those words. Harumi kept her room as comforting and organized as possible, although it was quite difficult when you live in an old broken down attic.

"Well, I believe that is your fault since you put me in this room and refuse to fix it up." She paused a minute to look around, then added, "it has quite a bit of potential, you know. It would be com-"

"SHUT IT RAT!! If you aren't better by tomorrow, then there's triple chores!!" Her aunt then turned to slam the door, but not even two seconds later, it shot open again.

"And you still have EXTRA CHORES!" And with that, the door slammed, this time making the whole room rattle.

Harumi sighed as she leaned back on her pillow. Her bottom lip started to quiver, both in anxiety and grief.

She missed her friend. He used to crack jokes at the right moments, and was always positive. He had talked about leaving her aunt's place, but she never thought he actually would.

But of course, fate was cruel to her. He had left about a week ago and left her aunt in a nasty mood. She was always a bit cranky, but never like this.

She remembered the moment before he left clearly, never letting his last words escape her mind.
