After every cold and rainy night,
I'm woken up by a familiar stranger
banging against the door.
I try to ignore him and go back to sleep,
but he is relentless, drilling and shouting,
loosening the hinges from their hold.
He has never gotten in
as I held the door,
rushing from the bed with a heavy head,
leaning against it, gripping the floor.
I'm exhausted from this nightmare
and its undeniable end.
One day he'll break the door
and will leave me helpless on the floor.
