To say the world of shinobi was cruel was an understatement. Many innocent lives were lost and countless amounts of blood was shed. For one point in time that was how Gaara lived his life, killing to satiate the Shukaku's bloodlust. He believed himself to be a monster who struck fear into the people as he walked by, but there was one exception.

(Y/n) was the only one who saw him for who he was. She helped him out of the dark and into the light. She was there when his uncle had died, she was there when they took he chuunin exams, she was there when the Hidden Sand launched their attack on the Hidden Leaf but most importantly she was always by his side.

Though Gaara had kept the stoic mask in front others, he let that slip just for her. She proved time and time again of her loyalty to him. She loved him and would anything to keep him safe and happy. When he became Kazekage, she had made it her mission to get the village to respect him more, though they resulted in death threats, Gaara was happy someone was actually making an effort for him.

When he couldn't sleep at night she would join him on the rooftop of his home and just stargaze. To others the two seemed like best friends but wise elders of the village knew that (y/n) was Gaara's little sanctity. She was his anchor and his sail. She kept him sain and help him improve.

Gaara though had some doubts and he intended on getting some of his questions answered.

"(Y/n), why do you stay with me? Are you not scared of the monster I am?" he asked quietly, attention on the girl next to him. She smiled at him, even chuckled a little at the question. She shuffled closer and put her arms around him in a warm embrace reminding him of how his uncle would hold him when he was upset.

" Gaara... you're not a monster. The real monsters are those who treated you like an inferior animal all because they were scared of what was inside you. They never gave you a chance because when they looked at you they saw what they feared, they didn't see the little boy who just wanted a friend so that makes them the monsters. Gaara when I first saw you I saw that little boy who just wanted a little love. I gave you that love because I know what it's like not to have someone care about you. What I'm trying to say is Gaara I fell in love with an angel not the devil's pet monster." she whispered.

Gaara looked at her briefly. The look in her (e/c) eyes showed her resolve, the flame of determination burning in her orbs. A tiny smile flitted at the corner of his mouth at the words that she had told him. Gaara pulled her more closely, laying his head on her shoulder while his whispered back those three special words.

(Y/n) smiled at him knowing full well that he finally had a grasp on what love felt like. It took a couple of years but here they were now with able to feel that one special emotion. Gaara felt as though all of life's burdens had been lifted from his shoulders as he sat with (y/n) on the top of the Kazekage building.

(Y/n) was his first friend, his saviour, his guardian angel but most of all she was now his. His to take care of, to love and protect and just be his. He didn't feel so alone anymore, he felt happy and content. If (y/n) didn't see him as a monster all was well worth it in the end.
