Needle and Thread

I was trying my hardest to stay focused on the road ahead of me, but I was still fairly drunk.

The yellow lines in the middle of the road squirmed with every blink of my eyes.

In the back seat, Bella screamed out in pain, her cries piercing the air and making my driving even more difficult.

When we finally reached my house, Mia and I cautiously lugged Bella into my dark living room.

"Mia, keep pressure on her wounds. I'm going to find a needle and thread."

"Ivy, you need to sterilize the needle in boiling water before we use it. Otherwise, Bella's wounds could get infected."

"We don't have time for that, Mia! That's definitely the least of our worries right now."

I ran up the wooden stairs to the dark bathroom, grabbing a needle from my mom's sewing kit.

Before I left, I grabbed a handful of painkillers, including some oxy left over from the beach house robbery.

When I returned, the couch was drenched in Bella's thick, oozing blood. She looked paler by the second.

"Are you sure about this, Bella?"

"Yes Ivy! Now come stitch me up before I bleed to death!"

I shakily kneeled down next to Bella, needle and thread in hand.

My mind raced faster than my body could process, blurring my vision and making my hands tremble.

"Bella, I don't think I can do this! What if you're bleeding internally?" I whimpered, my voice as shaky as my hands.

"Jesus, Ivy!" Mia harshly shouted, taking the needle and thread from me.

She leaned over Bella, commanding that I hold her hands. I grabbed Bella's hands as Mia, with steady hands, pushed the needle through Bella's tender skin.

Bella screamed, "Oww! Shit! Holy shit! Mia, stop!" Her cries echoed in my head as I struggled to keep a grip on her squirming arms.

Mia continued to stitch the wound closed.

Mia continued to intricately weave the needle through Bella's thick skin, closing up the large wound.
"Do you have gauze or large bandages?" Mia asked, tying off the end of the stitch.

Bella laid still, not moving.

"Is she...?"

"No, she's passed out from pain," Mia sighed, wiping her sweaty forehead with her bloody hands. "Now, can you please go get me gauze or a large bandage?"

I scampered back up the stairs, grabbing a large roll of gauze and tape.

It took us two hours to clean up the kitchen, living room, and ourselves.

We decided to take turns watching Bella through the night to ensure she didn't get worse, rip a stitch, or die.

Since adrenaline was still coursing through my veins, I took the first shift so that Mia could get some rest.

I sat on the couch, staring at the white ceiling.

What had my life turned into?

Most of my friends were dead; my boyfriend was a serial killer, possibly cheating on me. My brother and his friends hate me, and my dad's dead.

Honestly, nothing worse could happen to me.

I'm awoken by the loud cries of Bella. Startled, I shot up and looked around.

"Oh my God! My stomach hurts so bad!" Bella's voice was loud, but the pain was louder.

Mia sleepily grabbed the bottle of drugs and handed Bella a pill and some water.

"Ivy, your phone has been ringing off the hook all morning." Mia carefully pushed the pill into Bella's mouth and tilted the cup so she could drink.

I grabbed my phone, rubbing my eyes before looking at who had been blowing it up.

Vincent.

Over 300 text messages and 150 missed calls.

My phone continued to ring as he persistently tried to call and text.

Jesus Christ.

"I'm guessing it's your mom?" Mia asked.

"Actually no, it's Vincent." Venom lingered in my mouth as I said his name.

My chest clenched with rage thinking about the hell he had put us through.

And for what?

Why was he doing this?

Does he take joy in hurting the people I love?

The doorbell rang, startling me. I slowly put down my phone as the ringing continued.

I walked towards the door and opened it a creak, peering out to see Vincent.

"Absolutely not!" I growled, slamming the door shut and locking every lock.

"Ivy, open this door!" Vincent slammed his hands on the door, screaming. "Ivy, please! I was set up! I love you, please open this door!"

I covered my mouth to stifle my screams as he continued to bang on the door.

"Ivy, do not open that door!" Mia hollered.

"Ivy, please! I didn't hurt Bella! Ivy, open this damn door!"

I backed away slowly, my hands still over my mouth.

When I turned around to face Bella and Mia, I heard glass shatter behind me.

Vincent had broken a window with a large rock. I froze as I watched him climb through the broken glass.

"Ivy please, please don't be scared," He begged, walking towards me with his hands up in surrender.

I heard loud footsteps from upstairs and then a gunshot.

Whipping around, I saw Mia sprawled on the floor, a gunshot wound in her stomach. I backed away towards the front door.

Vincent instantly ran towards the girls and into harm's way. My eyes remained on him as he got on the floor and kneeled over Mia's limp body.

"Leave her alone, you freak!" I shouted.

"Someone call 911!" Vincent demanded, and threw his phone at Bella.

She scrambled to pick it up, staring at Mia's bleeding body.

"Now! Call 911 now if you want her to live!"

Bella nervously dialed and put the phone to her ear. "Help, please help! My friend has been shot!"

I heard more footsteps and another bullet flew, landing inches from Vincent's head.

To my surprise, Noah came tumbling down the stairs, wielding a gun.

Without hesitation, Bella stood and charged at Noah. He shot at her, grazing her thigh, but she didn't waver and disarmed him faster than I could comprehend, then shot him point-blank in the face.

I stood there, gawking at the scene.
