"Ugh!" Marceline Abadeer groaned, kicking the end of her bed post. She stared at the ceiling annoyed and frustrated. It had been almost a full year since her breakup with her ex-girlfriend, Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum, but she still thought about her in the midst of the night while she tossed and turned.
"It's not fair!" She screeched. The vampire queen bared her teeth like an alpha wolf eating it's prey. How come she grieved so deeply and terribly of Bonnie's soft, bubblegum pink lips, while her past partner moved on so well? Marceline had already thought of the naive idea that, maybe, PB missed her back- desired her flirtatious smirks, her neck kisses, her tight embraces. But, no, no, she had seemed to have thrown their history away like it was nothing. Especially like it was nothing to herself.
But, Marcy thought, how in the name of Glob could such a sweet girl be so heartless?
This was the question that caused her to stir at night. The lingering, hopeless, rhetorical question of the queen's misery. The other thing was, Is it really rhetorical?
Marceline had developed a plan many months ago to go and talk to Bonnie, but due to past actions it seemed hopeless and arbitrary. The Princess was always busy with her "royal duties" (the thought of it made Marcy huff and cross her arms over her chest) and science experiments, so she couldn't commit to a relationship, much less a homosexual one.
Marcy suddenly stood up and paced her dull, red and gray bedroom. The walls were littered with band posters, and the oak floor was covered in candy wrappers and energy drink cans. The vampire hadn't gotten a true good night sleep since the breakup; she usually mustered in a few hours of on and off naps. This was fine enough for her species, but it wouldn't be long until she just passed out.
She muttered to herself, "Day dreaming about her won't help you, you idiot. You have to do something!" She banged her fists hard on the plum purple dresser she was now towering over. A turquoise antique mirror showed Marceline's reflection, and she jumped back, startled. She had serious bags under her eyes, plus, the darkness of the night only dramatized it even more. Her eyebrows were drawn together in a furious way. Marcy saw deep in her eyes that she was lonely and anxious.
She eased her tense muscles and sighed.
"Listen," Marceline advised herself, "take a deep breath."
She obeyed.
"Okay, okay, good. Look at yourself, girl- you've really let yourself go. You know that. But, only one person can put you back together again."
Bonnibel.
It didn't need saying. It was obvious, right in her face. Marcy smacked her forehead with the translucent palm of her hand.
You wouldn't know logic if it introduced itself to you, she thought.
Glob knows you need a plan, though, she continued, so, that's what you have to come up with. But first, Marceline, just try to get some ding dong sleep!
