1 - a dreadful day

It was a dark, damp day in Talasville. Rue was trudging home past the depressing shops and rusty, heavily eroded lampposts, occasionally getting some gum stuck to the bottom of her shoe. The rain aggressively hammering her head, beating her as if she had done something wrong... Rue was only trying to get home from school, her day was bad enough, the rain needn't come and make it even worse.

Unprotected from the rain, Rue shook her black, frizzed hair violently, in a desperate attempt to dry herself... It was hopeless. Rue was now despondent, there was no obvious way to get home fast, no safe way at least... Rue had no choice, blinded by rain; so heavy, that when it landed it created a tiny explosion upon the now flooded ground. She bolted down the alleyway, the alleyway she had always been warned about, Rue never thought anything was terribly wrong with it, so she sprinted warily down the alleyway... Until, she saw lights, floating lights, not just any ordinary lights, they had a rather peculiar glimmer. Rue was at once drawn to them, they gave her a feeling of warmth and joy, she never wanted to leave. The rain stopped abruptly, then all the wonderous light faded out, suddenly everything was sinister. There was a very faint light illuminating the alleyway, spotlighting a pipe that was dripping an oozy, black substance, creating a slight noise as it hit the floor. Rue was unaware of the time, where she was, or what she had been doing. There were cardboard boxes littered generously all over the ground, the occasional rat scurrying past now and then... She was scared to run; Rue could not see where her foot was travelling atop this dark void.

Rue heard very distinct muttering coming from behind her, it sounded remarkably similar to her mother... Rue was terrified, there seemed to be several different mutterings from behind her now, she sprinted. As fast as her 15-year-old legs can go, she was fairly sure she managed to escape. So, she decided to turn around, there was nothing. Rue must have been merely hallucinating. Your brain plays tricks on you at night, right? Rue is terrified of what her mum will say when she gets home... Rue is back on the street now, but it's completely empty? Rue decides to check out the closest shop for a person. No one. What happened in that alleyway? There was a sticky note at the till, Rue decided to investigate. It was written in blood...

Rue's heart stopped, she was at once concerned for her mother and family... What if something happened to them? Was her voice box really chipped? Rue's mind was a mess... She decided to explore the shop, she saw blood on the floor. Lots of blood, it was spattered and spewed everywhere. There was no sign of a body though... Was this happening to the whole of Talasville? Was she, Rue, the only person left? Rue ran out of the shop, appalled by the mould encrusted on the walls, and continued running home. Hope throbbing in her chest, relying on her mother to be alive...

When Rue arrived home, she folded over and drowned herself in tears... There, lying on the floor, head lolling, body gutted, lay, her mother.

Rue's brain screamed as loud as it could at Rue, who was currently dumbstruck at the gory sight. Her mother, whom she had known for her whole life, who had brought her up, was now slumped against the wall in the kitchen. It seemed as if someone had tried to paint the wall with her, red, thick blood. Rue was absolutely devastated at this barbaric sight, who could've done this!? Realisation flooded Rue like a tsunami wiping out a poor civilization, that alleyway... was she perhaps drugged? Confusion, anger, desolation. Tears rolled down her dry, white skin as she closed her mother's eyes. Rue, the vengeful soul she was, decided to find out who would dare do this, and who else could they have done it to? Rue's head began throbbing like a baseball bat smashing in her head... Rue, without thinking grabbed a knife. She had no idea what she was doing, her heart pounding her chest like a tennis ball about to explode, she saw the lights again. Floating outside her window, were they leading her somewhere, perhaps? Rue; still blinded by rage and vengeance, followed them.
