Another morning is just the end of a dream, so I thought, but really it was just the beginning of any story. I had that dream again, ever since my father disappeared one year ago I've had a dream over and over again. It starts with me in a field, I am running toward a small hill, it seems like I've been running for hours. When I finally reach the end of the hill I start to slowly walk up it, I feel as though someone or something is waiting for me, and something was. I see it, the mirror, it's black pine frame, it's long glass face, the dead black mirror that lay upon the dead tree on the small hill in the valley. I walk slowly to it, it seems like I will never reach it, but I never do. I crave to touch it's smooth black edges, i hunger to graze it's glass face, I want to grab it, but I hardly know why. I almost touch it but i never reach it, then I wake up. In the morning I hear the alarm and I get up, I sit on my bed and stare at my wall mirror. I feel so confused, I get so close but why can't I touch it? I get off of my bed and get dressed into my school uniform, I put on my black plaid skirt and a tank top under my white flannel and silk coat. I throw on some stockings and put on my shoes and walk to the bathroom. I don't like my mirrors, they aren't like the one that I cannot touch, the one I crave to feel. I brush my hair and teeth and wash my face, I go down stairs to the kitchen and grab an apple for break feast. There I found a note on the counter.
"Morning Al, i had to leave for work early this morning, sorry couldn't eat breakfast with you again, I'll be home for dinner, don't forget to get a ride to soccer, I gave James the day off so he will not be driving you. Have a nice day at school, love you!
-Love Mom."
I was used to my mother not being home in the morning, usually James, our butler, is here but I guess not today. I am only 15 so I cannot drive but I can always bike to my school. I go to a boarding school in Southern Carolina, though it wasn't my choice to go there. If I could I would go to a public school but my mother was too afraid of me getting bullied, though bullies are every where. I don't have a lot of friends, just my best friend Tommy. He is a year older than me so we are not in the same classes but we grew up together and he has always been a close friend. He has long black hair that almost covers his crystal blue eyes, he is pretty tall for a 16 year old and is slender but stronger than he looks. He isn't the type of guy who would care for a girls looks or what is going on in a foot ball game but he is very popular with people of those type. Tommy was more of a laid back guy who every girl liked and every guy wanted to be, but they didn't know him like I did. It was now 7:45 and I was able to catch a bus to my school, Spring High, when I got off the bus Tommy was waiting at the door.
"Where have you been? It's almost time to go in." Tommy said.
"Sorry, James had the day off and my mother left for work this morning." I replied.
"She wasn't there again? That's like the third time this week. Next time give me a call, I can pick you up."
"It's fine, I don't need to bother you. Hey remember that dream I told you about?" Tommy looked at me and then quickly faced the ground.
"Yeah, the one with the mirror right?" He continued to look at the ground, we walked into the building toward my locker.
"Yeah, that one." I said while opening my locker, "5-10-15"
"What about it?"
"Last night was weird, I had it again but this time I felt like I almost touched it, I got closer than ever before, it was in my reach and yet I couldn't grab it." I shut my locker and Tommy and I continued to walk.
"Maybe you should see someone about this dream Alex, I mean Mrs. Sherman could surely afford it, and this mirror thing seems a bit weird, I mean ever since your dad had dis-" Tommy stopped talking and took a quick glance at me. I hadn't realized it but I guess I looked as though I wanted to cry. Tommy shook his head and stopped us in front of my home room. "Just be careful alright? I'll see you at lunch. And try not to drift off to much, ok?" I nodded.
"I'll try." I took a few steps into my home room and sat at my desk. I was in the last row, near the Windows, I was the second to last desk, in between Sarah Ralph and Drake Thompson. I often gazed out the window and thought about my dream. I found it strange that the dream began only two days after my fathers disappearance. I tried not to give it much thought but I often found my self drifting away. Before I knew it, the school day was over. It was a surprise to me that today Sarah didn't give a sneaky little comment on my appearence, I guess you could say that Sarah Ralph was the type of girl who would be passive aggressive. But today she didn't say anything to me, it seemed like the day was off just a bit, I wondered if it had anything to do with my dream? When I got home to change for soccer my mom was in the kitchen with the cooking maid, Marie. She had been helping to make some cookies.
"Welcome home Al!" My mother said.
"Hi mom." I replied.
"Listen, I was going to drive you to soccer today, is that ok?"
"Yea, sure mom." I had grown distant from my mom ever since the disappearance of my father. She had to take over his business after the incident and now she seems to be too busy for me. I went upstairs to change and as I did I found a note on my desk.
"Dear Alex Sherman,
This is a warning, stay away from what lurks behind the black pine, for if you do not head this warning then consequences will prevail.
-mirror"
I had dropped the note and fell onto my bed, I was so shocked by this note that I believe it cause me to faint. I had felt as though I had woken up but I hadn't, I was at the end of the hill. I began to walk slowly up it, I began to jog, then run! I had reached the top and there I saw the mirror. I walked up to the black mirror, I grazed it's black pine frame and studied it. I felt as though it was whispering to me. I slowly began to touch the glass face. When my fingers seemed to touch the glass face, they never really touched it, they went through it. I quickly pulled my fingers out of the glass face, I was in shock for a moment but my curiosity got the best of me, I had no doubt in my mind, I wanted, no, I needed to touch it's face. I pushed my left hand into the glass face of the mirror and just then I stopped, I couldn't move. I couldn't pull my arm out, nor could I push it further, I just stopped and in a sudden blink of an eye, I had awoken.
