Ruby sat at the backseat of Nancy's car between Max and Lucas and fidgeted with her nail polish, that by now was as cracked as the walls of the Creel house.

They were all on their way to Reefer Rick's to see Eddie, to drop off some supplies, food, and to bring him up to speed over the events of the last couple of days. The cemetery, Vecna's red soup mind world, thanks Steve, and at last, the Creel house.

Ruby had a small cut on her cheek from the flashlight that exploded in her face. Max claimed it looked badass, but it was basically physical evidence that last night really did happen. That it wasn't a terrible dream. That it wasn't something she imagined in one of her zone- outs in Mrs. Click's class to make up for the boredom. It wasn't even a fever dream, a hallucination that her hazy, sick mind came up with. It was as real as all the people in this car. As real as the fucking plague.

Goddamn it, Hawkins.

Her leg was bouncing up and down. Her anxiety getting worse every passing second. Right now, the only thing she could think about was Eddie. Not the music that continued to blast in her ear 24/7, not Dustin's incredibly loud chewing and Steve moving shopping bags around and making them rattle from where they sat in the huge trunk of the car. Oh yeah, and definitely not the background music from the radio.

What occupied her mind right now were long dark brown waves of hair that couldn't be tamed, smooth pale skin covered in exceptional tattoos, and most of all, big, beautiful, dark, chocolate brown eyes.

So deep. So gorgeous. So soft.

So incredibly pained.

Eddie's eyes were full of pain and guilt. And grief. Her best friend was murdered in the most violent and brutal way right in front of him. He was alone. The whole town was chasing after him, blaming him for her death, and they just left him there, on his own, for too long. They left him alone for too long.

"I'm sure he's okay, Rubes. Don't worry." Max whispered to her and placed a hand on her bouncy knee. Ruby stilled. She probably mumbled that last thing out loud.

"I hope to God you're right." She rubbed her eyes with her thumb and forefinger before placing her palm on top of Max's and smiling. It didn't really reach her eyes. Max noticed.

"How's our Katie doing?" Ruby nudged Max's ribcage playfully.

"Still running." The redhead casually accepted the need to stray the conversation in a different direction as distraction and nudged her back. "How's the charming man feeling?"

"Miserable." Ruby giggled softly and squeezed Max's hand. She released a long sigh from her nose and rested her head on Max's shoulder. Closing her eyes for a bit.
