It wasn't just his right-wing propaganda that irked you, it was his blatant rudeness as he passed you, shooting you a look that could kill as he left the town hall.
"Who does he think he is?" You scoff to yourself, standing from your chair and straightening out your skirt.
You made an effort to appear tonight to support liberal councilman Tom Chang, as he passed a motion to extend overtime for sheriff's deputies to stand guard at the Jewish community centre. Kai Anderson, as he called himself, was the only person registered to speak against the motion.
He waltzed into the town hall with his head held high, his electric blue hair secured in a tight man bun, wearing a grey suit. You, and the two other people in the audience, watched in astonishment as Kai Anderson rambled about instilling fear into the community - how you didn't need more police, and you didn't need to protect the Jewish centre because if the Jewish centre was to blow up - it would allow for Mr Chang to gain unlimited power. His views were unique, to say the least, and weren't shared with the rest of the audience as you all watched him with narrowed eyes, furrowed eyebrows and jaws hung open.
Mr Chang tore into Kai Anderson, and almost instantly, he fell off his high horse. You couldn't help but snicker as he moped out of town hall, until he glowered at you, and it set your lips into a straight line. Your eyes followed him as he left the building, and something inside you evoked you to follow him. Excusing yourself from your seat, you almost ran out onto the front steps, where you saw Kai Anderson shoving his handwritten speech into a nearby trash can.
"Hey!" You called, trying to keep up to Kai as he paced down the street muttering obscenities at no one in particular.
He stopped, then turned, and your eyes locked again with those of an embarrassingly obvious 4-chan troll.
"What? Here to humiliate me? Testing the waters of a humiliated man?" Kai's fists balled by his sides, and soon his knuckles turned white.
"I just want to know what the fuck that was all about, are you fucking insane?" Maybe it wasn't the best idea to further aggravate the man, but the anger that seared beneath your surface was not one to be reckoned with.
"Obviously I'm not the insane one here, you don't see me following strangers out onto the street to have a go at them!" Kai took a step closer to you, "what the fuck are you doing is the real question?"
"I asked you first," it felt immature to say, even when you crossed your arms over your chest to look more intimidating.
"Fuck off," Kai responded, waving his hand to dismiss you as he turned to keep walking in the opposite direction, "time will tell."
"Time will tell what?" You called after him.
He halted and turned to look over his shoulder a final time, a maniacal grin turning up the corners of his lips."You'll see."
The next day Tom Chang was murdered alongside his entire family, and now you knew exactly what Kai Anderson threatened you'd see.
His devious plan to provoke fear into the community in motion.
But unfortunately for him, your plan was far worse, for you'd do something no one else could.
Provoke fear in him.
