Being a castle gardener is hard work. There is so much ground to cover, and it has to look perfect 24/7. Sure, there are lots of other gardeners working as well, but that still doesn't help.I was given the task to remove some poison ivy from the castle wall near the entrance. Tomas, the head gardener, had given me this job. He has made it clear that he dislikes me, but this takes it to a whole new level. The last person who was tasked with this job had to be hospitalized for a week because their rashes were so severe.
I made the choice to wear some gardening gloves, but I'm very certain that the gloves won't save me from receiving a rash on my hands and arms. I also made sure to wear some of my gardening overalls to protect my legs. These overalls were a part of the uniform I was given when I started to work here.
Most of the female employees don't wear them because they think they are ugly. I wear them, and I look fine in them. I honestly don't see the issue with them.
I rip the evil plant off of the wall, making sure to not get hit when it falls to the ground. I sigh, I can already feel the rash forming on my forearms. I bunch up the vine into a ball and place it in a bucket, which will probably be burned.
"I don't get paid enough for this.." I grumble, pulling down some more. We gardeners don't get paid minimum wages, even though we work at the castle which has more than enough funds to pay its workers.
But I get it, The Royal Army needs the funds to build weapons and train new soldiers and medics for the front lines. The war has been hard for everyone, especially since the King declared that food had to be rationed. But he himself and all the other nobles don't ration.
The law made out that everyone under his rule had to ration, but in reality, it was only for the lower and middle classes.
Most of the men of age had left to join the army of their own accord. Recently, less people had been joining when they heard of the horrors that were on the front lines. Rumour has it that the King will make conscription law for any man over the age of 18. You hear lots of things working around the castle.
I should visit the infirmary after to get this all down, hopefully they still have enough medication for poison ivy rashes.
I pulled down the last of the vines, leaving the wall bare once more. I shove it into the bucket, being careful to not let the plant touch my skin.
I huff and pick up the metal bucket by its handle. I make my way to the cobblestone path, wanting to get off of the grass before Tomas yells at me for loitering. I stepped around the plant box and potted ferns that lined either side of the path.
I started to make my way towards the incinerator, it wasn't too far from here. I walk past a stone bench, two noble ladies chatting away. They ignored me, so I ignored them.
"Did you hear? General Schmidt's Army was missing from their outpost last week!" One of the ladies whispered to the other, the other gasped.
"Oh dear, that can't be good"
General Schmidt, one of the many generals for King Cypru of Harth. Harth is the country we are currently at war with, they are ruthless in their attempts to conquer Beccon, which is the country I reside in.
Harth is currently winning, they have taken much of the South under their control. They come closer to the palace every day. Maybe if the King was actually smart and wasn't so corrupt, we might have a chance at winning. But I have come to accept that the castle will be stormed any day now.
At least wine would be cheaper, as Harth is the worlds main export of wine, as well as sunflower oil which I found out recently. I hoped that we might be under better rule, the lower class and middle class would greatly benefit.
