before everything went downhill, matt ramos was actually a sweet boy.

he didn't have to hear his parents fighting yet, or his brother slowly turn into the person he swore he'd never be. he was happy, with a family that he believed genuinely loved each other.

he also had robin arellano. he doesn't know how it happened, and he doesn't really think about it too much either. one day they were friends and then a few months later they were telling each other secrets, hidden under robin's covers with nothing but a flashlight, giggling their asses off.

"okay, wait. wait. i think i overheard some girl saying she had a crush on you a week ago." matt giggles, holding the flashlight.

"ew, was it katie...?" robin snickers, glancing over at matt. they make eye contact, and something tightens in robin's chest.

"yeah, it was. she's kind of pretty, i don't know." matt laughs, breaking the eye contact.

"i guess." robin shrugs, taking the flashlight from matt so his arms would have a break.

"do you like any girls at school?" matt turned on his side, looking over at robin.

"nah. they're pretty, but just not... my type, you know?" robin explains, getting a little nervous.

"yeah, same." matt clears his throat. robin turns on his side as well. they were facing each other now. "what about boys...?"

he was nervous to ask, hoping robin wouldn't completely punch him in the face for doing so.

"that's not allowed, matt..." robin sighed. he didn't sound upset, though. he sounded sad.

"i know. but... if it were, would there be a boy that you'd like?" matt bit his lip. he didn't notice until he looked back up at that robin was staring at them.

"maybe one." robin responded, his eyes shooting back up to meet matt's.

matt started to get nervous. but not in the way that made him wanna get up and leave. in a way that made him feel bad for wanting to stay.

"who?" matt tilted his head. he had gotten closer to robin without even realizing.

robin laughs, and it's silent for a few more seconds. the flashlight flickers, letting them know that the batteries needed to be changed soon, but they couldn't care any less about that.

"you." robin whispered. the air felt stiff. there was no coming back from this. this could end their friendship.

but matt wasn't letting that happen. so he closed the space in between them and kissed robin. it was all a blur, but robin never once pushed matt away. he didn't even pull away first. matt pulled away, gasping for air, not receiving much due to the cover over their heads.

robin was quiet while matt caught his breath. they let each other process what had just happened. no one spoke for the next few minutes.

"robin...?" matt finally broke the silence.

"yeah?"

"i think i like you." matt confessed.

"i would hope so." robin giggled.

matt smiled, hitting robin's shoulder lightly.

"so... like i know it's not allowed but..."

"are you asking if we can be boyfriends?" robin laughs.

"yes." matt blushes. he doesn't even feel ashamed for asking. he's happy.

"mm, i don't know. i mean you're cute and all but..."

"but?" matt frowns.

robin sees his facial expression and laughs.

"i'm just fucking with you, matt. of course we can be boyfriends."

matt scoffs, hitting robin. robin just laughs, pulling matt closer to him.

"idiot. you had me scared."

"sorry. maybe." robin laughs.

matt rolls his eyes. he kisses robin again, and then they go back to gossiping about the random drama of their school. it's cool in a way, how they can be friends and boyfriends at the same time.

a few months later, they were still together. maybe it was something in the way that they treated each other that kept them together. this was their first "real" relationship, yet no one knew.

robin didn't really have any friends to tell, and matt couldn't tell the ones he had. they were fine with keeping it to themselves anyways.

"hey, matt?" robin whispered to him one day. they were watching a movie, but it quickly got boring so they just decided to talk.

"hm?" matt turned to robin, starting to feel a little sleepy.

"do you think we'll last long...? the relationship?" robin sounded nervous. it was an odd question to ask, sure, but he couldn't help but be curious.

"i think so." matt yawned, grabbing robin's hand. "as long as you stop pulling pranks on me."

robin laughed and nodded.

they didn't. robin broke up with him the next month. what could a boy do?
