•••after finally escaping the hectic town famous for its number of crimes and especially odd things occuring, tyler galpin had finally found what he was looking for: happiness.
soon after fleeing from the town, just after graduating, he stayed with a friend of a friend in her basement. soon after he was hired as a waiter at a small restaurant and a janitor at the local elementary school, where the friend of a friend, katie, worked as an english teacher. they bumped into each other often and before either knew they were sneaking around for hook-ups.
everything was perfect. tyler hadn't seen his father for almost two years; he finally felt happy and katie and his relationship was going smoothly. but as time went on, he forgot a poem that helped him stay rational: nothing gold can stay. this would cost him, especially when problems that tyler ignored rised in their relationship.
it was a spring day when the brunet approached his bleach blonde girlfriend who was reading on their deck. an idea popped into his mind and he quietly shut the back door, tiptoeing over to her and throwing his hands over her shoulders.
"BOO!" tyler yelled childishly, giggling as his girlfriend turned to him.
katie looked him up and down with a scoff. "god, you look like one of my students."
"what?" he chuckled.
"you're acting like a child," she muttered, barely loud enough for tyler to hear. tyler sat across from katie, thinking of how to make her feel better. tyler was about to ask her how her book was, but didn't have the opportunity when katie told tyler they needed to talk.
well, it wasn't tyler's fault he went for girls who obviously had no interest in him (cough, wednesday, cough). tyler had soon been kicked out of the small home, only given a few of his things- not a single piece of food.
tyler managed to find a phone, borrowing one from a kind elderly man where tyler found himself at a crossroads. he could call his friend ajax, who he had came to for almost everything. no, he told himself. he couldn't ask him to drive a whole hour just to pick him up (especially with no plan). he looked back at the numbers he even remembered, and though there were a decent amount he knew, many wouldn't even answer or would just plainly say "no."
the kind elderly man suggested he'd hurry, explaining that he would be leaving in a moment. tyler apologized, and under a moment where he felt pressured highly by his surroundings, he called a number he thought he would've never had to.
the man didn't sound much different from what tyler had remembered. even when he still lived in his home town, they barely interacted and when they did, it consisted of glares and bickering over basically nothing. but the man apparently became mature over the two years they had separated, because he almost seemed enthusiastic at the idea of picking him up.
"can't believe you live in maryland," the man said with a chuckle.
the man beside him, tyler, nervously chuckled. he had no reason to be so nervous, the man hadn't changed too much. so why was he panicking so damn much?
"yeah, i didn't exactly have a lot of options," said tyler with a frown.
"what?" he laughed lightly. "nah, you could go anywhere with all the money you have."
"had," tyler corrected with a frown.
the man glanced down a bit to look at him, feeling remorse for the things he could only imagine he went through. he sighed, looking back towards the road. "well, you didn't miss much in our ol' town. oh, and your dad left."
what? tyler looked up from the window his eyes were previously fixated on. "you're kidding."
"not at all. left a few months ago, heard he went to peru or somewhere crazy," the man explained.
there was a long silence between the two, where tyler processed the new information and xavier thought on what to say. he eventually came up with an "i missed you," which caused the silence to be even more awkward. xavier mentally cursed at himself, glancing at tyler to see his lost look.
tyler hadn't even heard him. he was so lost in his own head, xavier's words stuck in his head.
your dad left.
the two arrived in their hometown not too much later, where xavier kindly offered to let tyler sleep at his place. tyler blushed a bit at the thought of sleeping beside xavier, but his thoughts were shut down when xavier showed him too the couch. tyler was disappointed, couldn't identify the reasoning behind his emotions, and failed at not showing them.
xavier smirked, "thought we were sleeping together?"
tyler felt an embarrassing amount of blush spread across his pale cheeks, xavier letting out a light chuckle before wandering into the kitchen. he appeared back into the living room to see tyler nervously sitting on the couch, scared to touch anything. xavier smirked, feeling a bit bad about how embarrassed tyler was, like he was afraid to take up any space.
xavier took the remote laying in front of tyler, turning on the television, settling on some romance movie. xavier stood a few moments later, entering the kitchen and coming back into the kitchen with a bowl of popcorn. he placed the bowl between them both, tyler avoiding eye contact with xavier the whole time and not touching the popcorn.
"you don't like popcorn?" xavier asked randomly.
"ah, yeah, i do. i'm just tired."
xavier nodded, turning back to the television. the two finished the movie, tyler thanking him for everything before xavier left the living room for the rest of the night. the next day was a bit less awkward, and once a few weeks had passed, the two had the bond they wished they had back in highschool. they were closer than they were back in middle school, and had found they hadn't changed too much sense then.
though they had changed appearance wise - mostly xavier - they hadn't changed much as people. sure, they were wiser and more mature but the two still found themselves laughing at corny jokes they would when they were twelve. tyler realized this early on, and the thought of them being such a good duo again had started to worry tyler. tyler knew he was a good person and knew he had changed since he hurt xavier, but he couldn't shake the burdening thought away, telling him that he would screw up their relationship again. and as they started to get closer, more than just friends would, xavier's normal actions started to affect tyler more.
simple actions affected tyler greatly, causing him to feel like a complete fool. xavier took notice of this, his eyebrows furrowing at breakfast as he watched tyler avoid eye contact, his eyes resting on the wall. xavier soon became frustrated at tyler's actions, why would he be doing this? xavier wondered, soon falling into a rabbit hole of questions.
about a month had passed in xavier's home, and the two had agreed tyler could get a job and help pay the rent. they were officially living together, but neither would admit it. tyler didn't want to make things awkward, though xavier was the type to avoid awkward situations at all cost. and soon, xavier realized his questions would never be answered if he didn't confront tyler. so that's what he did.
