Nicholas
I woke to a cold chill trailing down my back. Running my hand along the sheets beside me, I found only emptiness. I shot up right to find Shade wasn’t beside me. As the panic began to surge through my veins, I desperately scanned the room for any sign of her, and my heart threw itself against my ribcage when I found the window. The curtains billowed gently in the breeze, and the shards of broken glass on the floor reflected and image of the moon. A small drop of deep red blood lay embedded in the rug. The strong sent filled my nose, and I recognized it as Shades sweet essence.
My heart hammered in my head. And I couldn’t move. I was motionless unable to think about anything other than her face, her eyes, and her necklace. When a small piece of paper flittering in the wind caught my eye, I reached for it the crisp paper light in my grip. The words imprinted in my vision, and my body finally lurched in to action.
I was at Charlie’s door before I could breathe again. “CHARLIE!!!”
Charlie
“Are you sure that’s what the note said” I asked panicking. “I mean maybe the girls just went out.” “Yeah, your right. Maybe I miss read it and it actually says they went to a 24 hour doughnut store at 2 in the morning!” Nicholas shouted “Stop hoping, and start thinking about what we are going to do!” The words still bleated through my mind. ‘Bring the ring or their blood will be spilled.’ “If they don’t have the ring, then that means Clara wasn’t wearing it when they were taken.” Nicholas said. I didn’t reply, I didn’t know what to say. “It must be at the bottom of the lake. That will take too long to find and by the time I get there Shade will be dead already.” Nicholas muttered, more to himself then to me. Then it hit me. “Wait, we aren’t actually going to give them the ring, are we?” I asked. “Charlie we have to. It’s too risky. I have one chance to get her back; I won’t play with my options. If something goes wrong….” He paused unable to finish his sentence. “I can’t lose her now.” I understood, but I had the crushing feeling of uncertainty. Lady Amesbury wants the immortal treasures, but she also wants the girls dead. I can’t understand what she has planned, but I know she has ideas that involve Clara, so a far as I’m concerned, she is as good as dead.
