Omniscient POV
emery had eventually came out her room, only when she knew billie was gone though. and she knew this from the series of text messages billie had sent her, desperately trying to decipher the girl's thoughts.

billie didn't understand from emery's point of view. how could she? she had no knowledge of emery's condition, she was oblivious. she meant no harm, in fact she was in awe of the girl's artwork. quite frankly it bewildered billie that emery would want to share such intriguing artwork.

but she began to understand how personal this could have been to her, how it was an invasion of privacy.

billie sat in her room, wondering how she'd feel if someone went through her songbook drafts. songs that she made sure would never see the day of light.

a pit grew in her stomach after realizing what she had done was not the way to go about such a sensitive topic to emery.

the only way billie could think of making it up to her was by apologizing the next time she saw emery.

the next day billie went out for lunch with her brother, in search of guidance.

"honestly bil, the best advice i can give you is to tell the truth, apologize honestly. the rest is up to her," finneas told his little sister.

billie thanked her brother for the advice. tomorrow was the 4th of july party at her brother's beach house. everyone would be there, friends, family, most importantly billie hoped emery would.
-
emery and claudia headed to the beach house in order to set up for tomorrow.

claudia noticed the decline in her sister's mood over the past few days but she didn't want to bug her. ultimately she understood what billie did wasn't the way to go about it, so she tried to be supportive.

"you okay kid?" claudia nudged her sister.

"yea, why?" emery asked.

"you're just more quiet than usual, no smile lately, for someone to text you," claudia told emery.

her lips curled upwards slightly but she stayed quiet and shrugged her shoulders.

"you know she's coming tomorrow?" claudia said.

"i expected her to," emery sighed.

"look at me em," claudia said as she set down the decorations and grabbed her sister's hands, "i know it's hard for you to trust people because they let you down, and i know it probably seems like billie did that now, but she meant no harm em."

"she likes you a lot, and i'm not saying what she did was right, i just think you should hear her out," claudia explained.

"i know claud." i mumbled as we continued to put the decorations around the house.

the next day
claudia and emery ended up being able to knock out the decorations in no time, all that was left was to prepare all the food and drinks being made.

"you can take a break em, you've been helping me all afternoon and yesterday," claudia said thankfully.

"it's ok, i don't mind, i have nothing else to do." emery replied as she continued chopping up fruit to put in the fruit salad.

around 5pm finneas, his parents, and billie arrived. carrying in even more food and drinks.

emery looked up from the cutting board and locked eyes with the black haired girl who had a small smile and hint of surprise in her face, as if she wasn't expecting to see emery.

emery greeted billie's parents before she went back to cutting up fruit.

once everyone settled down, billie took this opportunity to walk up to emery before guests arrived and everyone was too busy.

she approached the island, where emery stood slicing thin pieces of fruit for punch. "hey, can we talk, outside?" she asked, emery looked up and nodded, wiping her hands off before following billie off the deck and onto the beach.

the two girls walked along the beachside in silence for a few seconds.

"um i know you're still upset with me and after some reflection that's understandable, but i brought you out here to apologize." billie stated.

"i truly am so sorry for going through your art the other day. it was really stupid of me, i know if the roles were reversed and you went through my unreleased music i'd be upset. i really didn't have any bad intentions when doing so but now i realize how personal your work could be to you and for that i apologize," billie explained.

emery thought for a second, for the right words to come to mind.

"it's okay bil, i forgive you. and i also want to apologize for ignoring you for the past few days. it's not because i was mad at you, i just didn't know what to say because the artwork i had in my book is connected to something i don't let many people know about. and i guess i was afraid of how you'd view me once you found out." emery rambled, nervous about the approaching topic.

"em if it's something you're not ready to discuss it's ok."

"no, i want to tell you, i just don't really know how to go about it, but here we go i guess," emery took in a deep breath. "i have a condition called stargardt's disease. and um it basically causes progressive vision loss, meaning more than likely i'll be completely blind one day," emery explained.

there was silence between the two for a few seconds before emery spoke again, as she searched billie's face for any hint of expression.

"bil, talk. i don't want you to feel bad for me or anything like that. i just want it to stay the same, cause everyone acts different once they know...but i'm still me," emery's voice slightly cracked at her last words.

billie noticed and immediately wrapped her in a hug. she stepped back for a second and tilted emery's face up at her and smiled.

"i'm glad you told me emmy," billie told her.

emery smiled at the new nickname from billie, before softly pressing her lips to billie's and cupping her face.

the pair walked hand in hand back to the beach house, to see much more guests arriving.
-
later that night
the night was filled with food, friends, and laughter. billie searched through the house not wanting emery to miss the firework show, when she saw she'd beat her to it.

emery sat on the floor of the deck, with her legs dangling from the gaps in the railing, and her curls swaying as she intensely watched the fireworks shoot up over the ocean.

billie quietly joined her, so she jumped slightly once she noticed her presence.

"sorry," billie laughed and emery leaned her head on her shoulder.

something gave billie the courage to ask, "emery," billie said, and she hummed in response, "will you be my girlfriend."

a small glint of panic showed in emery's eyes, "are you sure," she asked worriedly, referring to her condition.

"em, your condition doesn't change the i feel about you," billie assured her.

"yes," she replied softly as a smile spread on her lips and the two girls kissed once more.
