Came the time for another one of their twice-a-month— obligatory —party nights. Where you all escape from your problems, let go of your little worries and the worries caused by work , and not fret about the agonizing migraine you'll all probably wake up with tomorrow.

But as exciting as this (usually) was for you and as much as you needed to drink the stress away, you just...didn't feel it tonight. The yearning for one and a half bottles of Soju wasn't there as it usually (always) was.

Instead, you sat there at the end of the table, with only three shots running through your veins, only nodding to whatever your tipsy friends had to say

From laughing at how Nayeon wouldn't stop forcing everyone to look at the 'family photo' she took of her, Momo, Boo, Dobby, and Kookeu in matching blue, satin pajamas.

To applauding Dahyun's drunken performance of some.. TikTok dance challenge? Or at least you thought it was some TikTok dance. You couldn't tell with her jelly-like movements. (But Sana making sure she cheered for the girl louder than the others)

Then laughing again as you all teased Tzuyu due to Nayeon's observation. "Yah, Tzuyu. You can take your eyes off of Chaeyoung. It's not like anyone will take her away." Tzuyu could only hang her head down in embarrassment.

Then listening intently at Jihyo's complaint of Jeongyeon showering with the lights off and the door open. Apparently she's unknowingly walked into the bathroom and into her own death countless times .

But turning your head to the one by your side, sitting comfortably, quietly, and untouched. As she usually (always) was, because she'd (always) only have a beer. But this time, you were joining her in this stable state—and the girl was surprised to notice your sobriety once you asked her if she was okay. She was.

Mina was just surprised to see that your face wasn't as red as a strawberry yet. She should've been the one asking if you were okay.

But the night continued on, and eventually the girls got bored of just sitting around and decided to get up on their feet and dance to the music—which was quite a struggle considering how rapid their visions were becoming and how they were stumbling over each other's feet with their own, but that didn't matter. They were happy. Happy and carefree and living in the moment.

And Mina was surprised again to see you still on your chair, smiling as you looked at the girls with adoration. Still in your spot.

It was quite odd.

Myoui Mina, not the only one sober and stable? Not the only one staying behind on the table?

So the girl couldn't help but ask if you were okay.

"Hey," Her voice was soft, and at the sound of it—you immediately turn your head to her with your eyebrows raised. "Are you okay?" Mina added in a little chuckle, hoping it saved her from sounding 'pushy' or 'too concerned'.

There were some unspoken boundaries between you and Mina. Not in a bad way.

It's just... the two of you... aren't close.

You'd consider yourselves best friends but in reality the two of you are (just) friends. In the same friend group. Friends in a best-friend group.

The two of you were never ones to strike up sudden personal conversations like with how you tell Jeongyeon: 'Hey, you know the word 'gullible' isn't in the dictionary?' She looks it up and punches your arm, 'Asshole.' Or your little bets with Chaeyoung and Dahyun: 'You both owe me fifty bucks if one day Momo shows up with a tattoo of a heart that says 'MOM.' on her arm.'

No . The two of you were more like: 'Did you see where the restroom is?' or 'When's that party again?' or even just a 'Hi.'

Awkward glances, awkward touches, those awkward silences when Sana leaves the two of you alone to go to the washroom .

And you were content with it... Because it was better than this relationship being nothing . With this little admiration you had for Mina, you'd rather take awkward silences over nothing. It's better to be not-that-close with her than to not be close with her at all. It's these little gatherings that allow you to see her. And you're content with it .

"Hey, are you okay?"

"Huh? Oh.. yeah. Why wouldn't I be?" You force out a smile, knowing that if your words were accompanied by any other expression and tone then it would've come off as sarcastic—or making it seem as if her question was stupid. Intonation can go a long way.

Why wouldn't I be? Replaying your words in your head, hoping you sounded friendly enough.

Mina's soft chuckle was a relief, showing that your response didn't give her the wrong idea. "It's just that you're still.. Sober?" Mina couldn't help but grow shy and hide behind the back of her hand, hoping you didn't find her words weird and offensive.

The two of you were unknowingly circling each other like cautious cats .

"Ah." At the mention of your state, you laugh along with the girl and nod. Shrugging, "I didn't really feel like going crazy tonight."

Mina raises her eyebrows in surprise. "Really?" You nod in response, placing your hands on your lap. (You're wiping the sweat off.)

And after realizing that the two of you are back to silence, Mina can't help but ask why . "Why?"

You quickly look back at her, caught off guard at the fact that the two of you were exchanging more than just five sentences. Immediately, your mind works to bring words to your tongue. But you just shrug again, "I.." And you realize your brain has nothing to give your tongue. ".. Really don't know."

A sheepish smile is all you can give Mina as you scratch your head and shrink small into your chair.

But

What Mina gives you is a gummy smile, which breaks into giggles because she can't hold it anymore.

You feel your cheeks grow warm at the sight. Feeling a bit of pride for making one of the most beautiful women you know laugh, even if you don't know what you did to make her laugh. But contrast to that, you still feel embarrassed .

After her little laughing fit and your face growing more red— that's it .

Mina collects herself, tucks a fallen strand of hair behind her ear, and turns back to the girls. That's it .

With her gaze away from you, you writhe in your chair, questioning if you were warming up due to the vodka or because of Mina.

You're left in your own intoxicated brain for a while before you're brought back to reality again. Even if it feels like you're dreaming when Mina calls for you again .

"Are you still going to drink?" Even if the question is sudden and not in the top 10 list of questions you'd expect someone to ask you , you answer immediately. "No.. Why? Are you? Do you want to?" You're on the edge of your seat, ready to pull your wallet out and pay whatever price you had to just for her drink.

Mina shakes her head.

You blink. "Oh. Well why do you ask then?"

"Do you want to head home?"

"Sure." You didn't even process half her question after you answered. Shit . ".. Do you have a car?"

"No. How did you get here?"
