Chapter 1: Leah

I look down at my hands because I'm really board and nervous. There is sweat all over them and no matter how many times I wipe them on my pants the sweat doesn't leave.

I'm in the hospital waiting to see if my mom is going to be okay. Ha, now I'm fooling myself. My mom has cancer, and bad to. No one wants to tell me anything because I'm "just a kid" but I've learned about cancer in school and once it reaches your brain you're pretty much a goner. I think it's close to my my mom's brain and I have to admit I'm terrified.

The doctors are running some tests right now. They say I'm not allowed in because it might get to crowded. Quite frankly I'm okay with this though because I hate hospitals and don't want to be there to see the results. Hospitals creep me out because a lot of people die in them. Momma says I need to get use to them though because one day they might save my life.

I don't even care about my life right now though, all I care about is my mom. She's all I have left and I just can't lose her too. My mom said that if she dies I'll have to move in with my Aunt Sarah. Who is awesome, but I would really miss my friends, not to mention my mom as well.

My aunt lives all the way in FLORIDA! That's way too far, and way to hot! Here in New York we get cold weather, like snow. I would really miss the white Christmas that we get up here. Ugh, what am I saying mom is going to be okay, I'm going to be okay, we are all okay, right?

"Hey mister grumpy gills" my phone is goes off, its my friend Leah. We're big Disney fans and her favorite character is Dory so I thought that was the best ring tone. "Hey hey, how you holden up" Leah's my BGFFL(best goofy friend for life) and I keep her up to date with my whole life so she knows exactly what's going on. "Not so good, they said they would take like only one hour max and it's been like three!" "O Kate I'm so sorry I wish there was something I could do.......have you seen her at all today?" I sigh, "just this morning, they think I'm "too" young to be involved.
Plus my mom doesn't want me to worry and told me to wait outside."

There's a moment of silence and I know she is probably thinking of a way to cheer me up because she always does. "Well, maybe what you need is a break. I mean it's up to you, but if you want my mom and I are parked out front." This is why I adore her. "Ya that would be nice, thanks."

Before I leave I go to the room where they are taking the tests. There's a doctor outside of the door who I know won't let me in. So I just tell him to tell my mom I'm with Leah and will be back later. He disappears into the room for second to tell her. When he returns and says I'm good I leave and head towards the front entrance.

When I walk outside the first face I see is Leah's. She has a sympathetic smile on her face and I know she's worried about me. It takes me a moment, but I finally realized what she was wearing. Her blue and yellow swim suit, blue flip flops, and a Nemo towel. Man she loves that movie.

"Ready to go?" Leah says taking me out of my thoughts. "Um, ya, Leah? Where are we going?" There were a ton of places that involve swimming in our area so I'm clueless. "Guess you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" "Ugh" I sigh she is always surprising me, or at least she tries to, most of the time I figure it out.

We walk over to her car and open the door. You would think I'd be surprised to see my yellow and blue swim suit, yellow flip flops, and Little Mermaid towel, but I'm not. I gave Leah a key to my house a long time a go for emergencies and she gave me hers too. Once we we're all in and buckled up Silvia, Leah's mom takes off down the road. It takes about 30 minutes for us to arrive at the middle/high school pool. It is Sunday and they have open swim for the community.

We all hop out of the car. Leah and I race to the school, she wins, but not by much. I quickly go into the locker room and get changed. When I come out Leah is waiting for me. I put my stuff down grab her hand and we jump into the pool together.

As soon as I hit the water I feel refreshed, but also cold. Leah and I race each other and jumped off the blocks. We also get a couple of weird looks from other people, but I don't care I need this, I can finally relax and take my mind off my mom.

Until the worst thing ever happens.....
