Lan Xichen was staring at the screen.

A cup of coffee was getting cold and colder on the low table next to the sofa, waiting for him to taste and try, abandoned.

The conversation with Stella had taken place 15 minutes ago, but he could not remember. Or was it 45 minutes ago?

Time was so relative when his lover was not here. It was, truly, quite amazing. His head was full of just one thought: how empty the house was, now that Jiang Wanyin was gone.

It was noon time and he was hungry, but he knew that he had to do some work today too. The maid was cooking in the kitchen, still  –  he could catch the aroma, the occasional clattering of dishes and the beeps that came from the smart oven as well, but he never went there to beg for food.

He thought that maybe he could wait for Wanyin, maybe they could have lunch together.

Should he call him?

No.

They were probably just half-way to the city.

He was now amazed how his natural, inborn curiosity was easily overwhelmed and overrun by his curiosity about what business A-Cheng and A-Xian might have together.

He could guess; he dared not dream.

Sighing a little, he pulled up the file of Victor Zorn's primary psych evaluations. It was the part about the bible, and the young man raging about the injustice of his arrest, preaching to policemen, lawyers and the media alike, preaching about repenting and the fear of god.

He knew this stuff. There was nothing new about this stuff. He rather had to track down the changes in his disposition, the mild alterations in his testimony, his explanations, anything that the D.A.'s office might dig their filthy nails into.

Another sigh. He was pretty sure that Gao Xi and Kath were reading into it too; the time was getting closer. Du Shuangyu's due diligence was out of the question even; Lan Xichen was certain that the ambitious young man was taking the paperwork with him to revise even while he showered.

The thought amused him too much, and he lazily remembered that he had never seen Du Shuangyu naked. Kath had never been shy about it, and his adventures in  hookerland, accompanied by Gao Xi, were legendary.

Too bored already, he took another look at his to-do list. Ah, yes. That  was promising to be an interesting conversation indeed!

He grinned to himself; he had planned to call Wanyin's boss as early as last  week, but this particular task somehow always slipped his daily schedule. Now was the perfect time to do it, moreover  –  A-Cheng wasn't home to eavesdrop on his calls.
