—---Jason’s POV—---

This is the worst day of my life.

“What do you mean you’re moving?” I asked with Evan next to me, crying while hugging Brandin.

Brandin replied, “I don’t wanna go, but my parents are making me. Something about recovering more memories or just in general. My dad’s job is moving him to Virginia.” He shrugged. “There’s nothing I can do.”

Evan started crying harder, getting tears and snot all over Brandin’s bed. Brandin just sighed, before pulling Evan off him. “Evan, I love you, but come on man, pull it together.” Evan ignored him, instead opting to try to pull Brandin closer to him. Naturally, Brandin resisted.

“How are you supposed to recover your memories if you’re not here?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I hope I’ll be alright though,” Brandin said.

We spent the rest of our time together crying, too sad to talk about anything.

Before long, the hospital kicked us out, saying that they needed to take some final tests before releasing Brandin. Evan’s mom had to come pick him up, otherwise he wouldn’t have made it home safe. I hopped on the subway, still blinking back tears. Somehow I’d known that nothing would be the same, but hearing that Brandin was moving hit the final nail into the coffin. I didn’t even register the song playing in my ear buds. My mind was fully on autopilot.

Before I knew it, I was at Topanga’s. Thankfully, no one I knew personally was there. I asked the waitress for a cup of water, because I didn’t really feel like eating, I just needed to rehydrate after crying. When it came, I just stared down at the table, thinking about Brandin and all our fun adventures.

—---Lucas’s POV—---

After a long day of dealing with Riley and her missing bear, I was ready for a break. I figured that if everyone was at the Matthews’ apartment, I would be safe to go to Topanga’s. I never thought I’d be hooked on the food there, but they had a really good burger and fries. My mouth was watering just thinking about it. It reminded me of Texas with the quality, honestly. And while the tacos sounded good, I didn’t think it was worth it anymore.

As I walked down the stairs, I wondered idly what Jason was up to. I found myself thinking more and more about him as time went on, even though Riley and Maya still held their places in my thoughts. But I couldn’t help it, something about him just drew me in.

Almost as if my thoughts summoned him, I saw Jason slumped over a table in a booth, a nearly empty glass of water next to him. His eyes were closed, and his breathing was somewhat even.

I walked up to the counter, where a waitress stood watching Jason as well. “Excuse me?”

“Hm?”

“How long has he been here?”

“Just over an hour,” she responded. “Just came in, asked for some water, and sat there by himself. He looked like he’d been crying.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Alone?”

“Mhhm.”

“Huh,” I said. “I’m his friend, by the way, so when I wake him up, I’m not just being a creep.”

The waitress stared at me, shocked, before laughing. “Oh sweetie, you’re all good. But boy, did I need that laugh tonight.”

I chuckled too, before heading over to Jason. I put my hand on his shoulder, and gently shook it. “Jason.”

He groaned. “Five more minutes.”

I laughed out loud at that. “Jason, you’re at Topanga’s. This can’t be comfortable for you.”
