In the recesses of my mind
I search for the glimmer of approval
The road has been tough and dark
Why does that burning need to be loved exist within me?
To feel alive through the smiles of others
The words of encouragement from afar
I knew deep down having codependency is wrong
I matter to me
Wearing the faintest tint of red on my lips
Placing roses in my hair
I stare at the mirror
The strength to let go of the past
Bitter daggers that clung to my young self
Throw it away
The past is a shackle I won't ever return to
Vices are like a cage where the songbird sings
Trapped and beautiful
That's not my path anymore
Honoring the love nestled within these hands of mine
Warm and beating like a child's heart
I lift myself from the abyss of my tormented memories
Songbird fly away
For you are the phoenix
Matter to someone
I matter to me
