"Miss Cavelli has been admitted to hospital after sustaining massive head injuries. Let us put her in our prayers," Thato read out loud a message the school had sent out less than half an hour ago on their social media page and I was knocked down with a feather, my shock was that much."Can I read that myself?" I just needed some confirmation before believing what I had just heard with my ears.
Thato handed over her phone as sympathy washed over her face, I took it and read through the very same words my best friend had and the truth finally set in. But how?
"What happened?" I turned my attention to my best friend who looked as puzzled as I was.
"I don't know but what I have noted is that this message is as blunt as they get, they have not mentioned what kind of head injuries, and when she was admitted, " she explained with furrowed brows and she was right, it was as if there was something they were not disclosing. But nevertheless, she was in the hospital and I would put her in my prayers.
"We will just have to put her in our prayers so the Lord can cover her with his blood," I looked over at her and she nodded as sincere concern washed over her face. Thato was a tough egg to crack but once cracked you could see the softness inside.
"Yeah, let's do it now before we leave," she said, joining our hands in prayer and bowing her head, her eyes closed shut as I followed suit.
"Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom and thy will be done. Today we stand before you as we submit the life of your daughter Samantha. We ask of to please fight this battle of life and death for her and let her live in this world that you have given us, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen." I concluded the prayer in hope that she would be healed in no time.
We gathered our bags and keys before going on another journey to school. The only person I was worried about was Nio, he must've taken this hard, they were both so in love, you could practically see the love oozing out of his eyes and now the love of his life was in the hospital. As much as it hurt saying that I would have to just suck it in and hope I would find my better half because clearly, he was not.
In no time at all, my car was parked in a comfortable space, facing the large building, Thato cut the engine and we both stepped out, drawing many eyes, which by now had become a usual occurrence. A worried-looking Sienna hastily walked to us. We met her halfway, seeing as she was so worried, she was a ray of sunshine.
"Did you guys hear what happened to Samantha?" I should've known, the news around here spread like a wildfire especially since they had broadcasted these specific news.
"Good morning to you too, Ms Sienna. How are you doing today?" Thato gave her a deadpan look.
"Sorry, hello wonderful friends. I am doing as good as I can be," Sienna replied sheepishly before getting all serious. "As I was saying Samantha has been admitted to hospital and rumours have it that she was shot countless times," she whispered as though it was some top secret message or rather gossip.
"Shot?" Thato whispered back, effectively pushing the gossip which I wanted no part in.
"Yeah, apparently her dad is a big shot mafia guy," Sienna continued making Samantha gasp in bewilderment and making me perk up in interest.
"Mafia?" I found myself asking before I could stop myself, further encouraging the one sin I struggled the most with, gossiping.
"Yeah and that's how she ended up in the hospital but I say good riddance, what goes around, comes around," Sienna responded with absolutely no sympathy at all because the week before she had revealed something dear to her heart, the humiliation of her friend which she experienced at the hands of Samantha but neither she nor her friend could do anything about it because of the mysterious power Samantha held in this university so her friend ended up leaving this university after her name and self-esteem had been dragged through the mud and since then Sienna held some secret animosity towards her.
"You can't say that Sienna," Thato commented, shaking her head as she echoed my unspoken words.
"Yeah, remember the Lord says we should live with everyone, including our enemies- even though they purposefully hurt us, no situation or feeling goes unseen by our Lord so we have to trust him as he says in Romans 12:19 vengeance is his," I added on to Thato's words, hoping the words would soften her heart towards Samantha.
But I knew that it would take more than words to help her see reason, "No, if he toke vengeance then Samantha wouldn't be parading around the campus as though she owned it, then those who were less privileged would not be treated like bubblegum under her heels, she would not hurt people purposefully for her enjoyment for years upon years," She ranted in anger, moving her hands around as she uttered every anger fueled word.
It was true when they said harsh words can cause more wounds than sticks and stones, a single piece of paper was enough to change more than one person's life and nothing could reverse that, I knew she would not understand that God would take vengeance for her and her friend because even I did not understand the Lord's ways at times but what I knew was that he did not lie nor not keep his promises, so he would not say something and not put it into action.
"His ways are not our ways," I simply said as she directed her anger towards me.
Just as she was about to reply Thato broke in, "Guys, can we drop this topic?" She asked, looking at the both of us trying to gauge our reaction. I was the one to give a firm nod and Sienna soon followed suit but not before sighing her frustration.
And in no time we were engaged in a light and flowing conversation with Sienna back to her normal self, forgetting we were even arguing not so long ago.
Five minutes before the bell could make its resounding noise, I hurried along to class in hopes of seeing Nio but I had a huge doubt he would attend today. Thato and Sienna continued with their talk while taking a long trek to their classes.
The class felt weird without Samantha sassing everyone out and her best friend Rebecca who followed her and imitated her every move, secretly trying to impress her enough to notice her and actually love her and not use her as everyone saw she did.
As I ascended the widely curved stairs I got a huge shock as Nio was calmly seated on his normal seat, his gaze locked on his phone and looking as handsome as always though today he wore a black short sleeve shirt which displayed his sleeve of tattoos and bulging arms. I paid no heed to the designs and wordings on his arms as they were written in italics making it a tad harder to read from afar but rather focused on the man who was sitting in a class rather than being with the love of his life who was fighting for her life.
I hastily climbed the rest of the stairs before finally reaching my seat, "Nio?" I called to him expressing my shock for him being here of all days today.
He removed his gaze from his phone and flashed me a smile, which just had to be forced, "Amore, how are you?" Seems like the endearment had not been let go especially during this tough period of time.
I toke a seat with furrowed brows not understanding his unusual behaviour, "Shouldn't I be the one to ask you that question?"
"Excuse me, why wouldn't I be fine?" He asked acting oblivious to the situation he was currently finding himself in.
"Because your girlfriend is in hospital, fighting for her life and you are here," I deadpanned making sure he understood how serious I was about this.
"Oh," his features distorted into pain and I immediately regretted even bringing up the sensitive topic in the first place. He remained composed which I knew just had to be hard for him, "I did not want to be in the depressing hospital thinking about how she could lose her life so I came here in hopes of getting my mind off things but seems like I cannot even do so without someone reminding me of the predicament."
"I'm so sorry, I did not mean to bring up such a sore topic."
"It's okay, let's just not speak about it, okay?" His eyes were blinded by sadness, an emotion I had never seen on his face, and nor did I ever want to see.
"Okay," I nodded with a tiny smile.
We talked about everything and anything, not daring to even touch on the forbidden subject. Internally, I prayed that the Lord strengthened him during this tough time and gave him hope for a better tomorrow.
