Killian was back and seizing nonexistent power. From what I knew of him, it didn't seem like the best idea. Maybe Pierre or Jovie could be the leader? I would have spoken up, but fear stopped me.

Luckily, Adeline had a similar idea.

"Why doesn't Pierre become the leader?" Adeline asked.

"Pierre is weird," Killian scoffed.

No weirder than you!

"What do you mean by that?" Pierre asked calmly.

Killian rolled his eyes. "You're just weak. And, no offense, but you're a solid three out of ten..." He sighed. "You don't really lead. Leadership doesn't suit you, it's plain to see."

"Oh." Pierre didn't seem upset, just tired. "I'd prefer if we kept it the way things were, for now. We can have another trial if we need it, but if everyone just keeps to themselves, we'll be fine."

Secretly, I wholeheartedly agreed.

Half of the day, I spent washing everyone's clothes. The next half would be dedicated to passing back all the clothes. Though some people would be receiving a smaller size.

The recent days had been peaceful and I found myself fulfilled. The only person I ever worried about was Adeline. I debated reaching out to her, but I was worried she would think I still had a crush on her.

I didn't. The feelings were long forgotten, though our past friendship wasn't. Maybe I could rekindle it.

I stacked her clothes first, so they would be at the bottom of the pile.

Chad and Jovie were first, so I headed to Camp Ginger Ale with their clothes in hand. Pierre called a friendly goodbye as I left.

I found them both laying in the sand conversing with one another.

"Hi," I greeted shyly.

Jovie sat up and turned to me. Her face stretched into a warm smile and reached her eyes. She radiated warmth. "Hey!" she called.

"I've brought clothes."

"Yes! Perfect, thank you."

Once I gave them both their clothes, I was on my way again. I treaded east, toward Camp Avión to drop off Lexie and Elijah's clothes and would follow the trail back to Camp to Killian's shelter.

Killian had tried becoming our leader a couple of times, but it always failed.

Knowing Lexie and Elijah were asleep, I dropped off their clothes at the foot of their shelter.

Lexie had changed a lot since moving in with Elijah. It was less Barbie-core and more Raquelle or Nikki. Her pretty blonde hair had been cut short, which was actually really hot.

I knocked on the side of Killian's shelter and he appeared at the door. Snatching up his clothes without a word, he looked furious. He disappeared back into his round lodge.

Okay...

Pierre and Emma were next. Circling back, I found Pierre by the fire and handed her her clothes, which she thanked me for with a wide smile and I simply left Emma's clothes in her shelter beside her bed.

Adeline...

Walking around the island, I found her where I first caught feelings for her: the north shore. She was ankle-deep in the water with a faraway look in her eyes. When I called her name, she immediately turned.

"Fawn!" she beamed. Launching herself forward, she greeted me with a crushing hug. "I'm so, so sorry," she said in the embrace. "I should have never cut you off. You were the best friend I ever had."

"What... what? Really?" I was more than taken aback. If it wasn't for the hug I might have fallen down in surprise.

Adeline let me go, but stayed within a foot of me. "I'm so sorry I didn't apologize sooner, I just needed to think things through. Thank you for coming to visit me."

"Yeah... yeah of course," I smiled. "Here are your clothes."

"Oh sweet!" Her face flushed with a hint of embarrassment. "Thanks."

I smiled. "Anytime."

Watching silently, I spotted Ruby shuffling out of her shelter. She would be going to Mateo's. Perfect.

I was finally going to get the power I deserved.

Running, I flew down the trails and stopped right in front of Mateo's shelter. I knew I needed to make quick work of him if my plan was to work. I had put way too much thought into this for it to fail.

You got this, Killian.

Mateo never saw it coming. The most loved boy on the island died peacefully in his sleep.

Diving out of the shelter, I hid in the thicket. Just in the nick of time. Ruby waltzed down the trail.

"Mateo? Hey, you got some fish? Mateooo?" Ruby poked her head inside the shelter. "Oh-" she cussed. "Damn- uh..."

Ruby shifted her weight from side to side, then crawled inside silently. Munching and crunching sounds floated to my ears.

I knew I could count on Ruby's coldness. But I didn't expect her to take it this far. But let's just say I'm glad she did.

Everyone would blame Ruby and I would be crowned the glorious leader. Or at least that's what I thought...

They needed to see that the island was still dangerous without me as a leader. I debated my options, but I found Fawn would be the next best target. If I did it right, Adeline would be blamed and killed.

And the island would fall to me. Everyone would be obedient to me!

When I arrived at the camp, Emma was outside, poking the fire. I had forgotten she stayed up throughout the night. Hiding in the brush, I waited patiently for her to leave. My entire plan hung on her getting up to leave.

The second she did, I rushed out from the thicket and looped around to crash into Fawn's shelter. Groggily, the girl sat up. But it was too late. Hurling a heavy stone, I knocked her out.

And then I killed her.
