The 19th century as of this writing has ben the bloodiest century in human history. In World War two sixty million were killed, mostly unarmed combatants. Thats over 2.9 percent of that current poplation. Civilizations combating with one and other for land, power, authority. Thing mostly  trivial. However never has mankind went extinct from warfare this becomes more of a probability in the 21century thermal nuclear age.

The Atomic era.
Like most new technology the idea of inriching uranium to create a fission reaction ( the splitting apart of heavy elements into lighter ones) First appeared in a sceince fiction novel H.G Wells A World Set Free.
