the blonde stepped outside into the cool air of a boston afternoon in fall.
hazel had always been a fan of the cold. she never liked any hot weather.
at least, in the cold you could layer up and make your self warm. in warm weather, if you're hot, you're just that. there isn't much you can do to cool off.
that was her reasoning as to why she preferred the cold.
she took a breath of the crisp air and felt the slight breeze that was barely even there.
other people would have said it was too cold and put on a jacket, but hazel didn't mind. she had actually left her jacket in her best friends house. the same house she was standing outside of.
because aaliyah had left with her mom to go pick up her sister and her boyfriend from the airport, hazel was alone.
no, hazel was by herself. she hated the word alone. she felt that it had more of a emotional meaning, while being by herself was more physical.
to her, being alone was to have no one at all. being by herself but also having no one to call.
no one to talk to.
no one to turn to.
no one to be there for her.
she wasn't alone. she had people. she had her best friend since elementary school, aaliyah.
she had aaliyah's mother, toni, who was like a second mother to her. toni helped her and was always there for her when her own mother wasn't.
she had her aunt beatrice. sure, she was almost never home because of the countless business trips out of state and country, but she was there emotionally.
hazel didn't have many people but she had enough.
plus, now she had matt.
she was hesitant to add him to that list and still isn't sure. after all, they meet when she was black out drunk. they had only had one conversation she remembered and it was over text.
not to mention, he was famous. she wasn't sure if she even meant anything to him.
but deep down, she knew he belonged on that list.
she trusted him. she wasn't sure why, but she did.
she believed him when he told her that he hadn't taken advantage of her while she was unconscious.
she wanted to open up to him. tell him about everything.
her past.
her parents.
her addiction.
but she was scared of what he would think.
she was scared of over sharing.
she knew it was already a turn off that she wasn't sober. she could tell by his texts.
even if they hadn't texted, matt sturniolo and his brothers had said that they were all sober multiple times.
hazel hadn't ever really considered quitting seriously. until now.
when matt had asked her if she ever thought about it, she considered it seriously for the first time.
that night had changed something in her. she wasn't sure what it was but she could feel it.
she felt a mix of emotions about it. trying to pick them out to know what the were specifically. but it was hard.
it was mix. they were all mixed up.
worry.
relief.
happiness?
awe.
anger?
regret?
she could have sworn she felt every emotion in the book. it was confusing, not to mention exhausting.
she had started walking home.
she felt like a robot.
she knew where she was going but she didn't feel herself going there. it was as if she was stuck in her head and someone else was controlling her body.
she was living in a daze.
