yeonhada checked her phone's weather app as she sat down at her desk. she sighed as an icon of the sun signified sunny weather until evening. it was nice weather, she had to admit that, but yeonhada hated one thing more than anything; carrying umbrellas when she didn't need them. her umbrella, in exchange for its quality, was heavier than most and her wrist did not enjoy the pressure of such an object without reason.
oh, well, yeonhada thought to herself. putting down her phone, she continued to work at her computer. she had recently gone on vacation and in her week off, emails sent to her had stacked up an enormous amount. she wasn't sure if her coworkers didn't know, or if they just didn't care.
while writing a reply to a particularly conspicuous email that caught her eye, yeonhada heard the door to her part of the office open. she didn't look up at first, figuring the person would come up to her to introduce themselves and state what they needed. but after a few minutes of complete silence other than the sound of typing and a second breath, she decided this person was waiting for her to start their interaction, so she looked up.
"satoru, i told you not to 'visit' me anymore," yeonhada whined, trying to act as visibly annoyed as she could muster.
"i know, but i get bored sometimes, you know?" satoru scratched his head and moved behind yeonhada to start playing around with her plants. "how is this thing still alive? do you have somebody water it for you? the yeonhada i know would never keep her plant alive long enough to grow this big."
"it's been years, satoru, maybe yeonhada has changed," yeonhada replied plainly. this was the first time she recognized there were plants in the first place, so she knew she hadn't, but satoru didn't need to know that. "well, now that you've visited me, you should leave."
"if you've changed so much, how come you still act like we're not friends?" satoru questioned, ignoring her call for him to leave.
"because we're not friends, satoru," yeonhada sighed.
they were friends, at a time. satoru had met yeonhada at a club one night. she had gone for her friend's birthday, and he had gone with his best friend on a whim. satoru, with the cockiness he had, and still has (much to yeonhada's dismay), had gone up to yeonhada as soon as he saw her. he tried to woo her with his "best" pickup lines, which yeonhada found sort of amusing, but definitely not wooing. as big as satoru felt, he did not let this little humiliating experience stop him. he bought her a drink, hoping to get some type of serious with her. a few drinks later, satoru had convinced yeonhada that they would have a great time in the club's bathroom. and yeonhada, being at a party, was curious as to what this "great time" satoru was promising would entail. long story short, they did something yeonhada didn't know whether to regret or not. it wasn't that bad of a time, really.
afterward, they talked and talked and talked. they had much more in common than either thought they would. the paramount discovery being that they were both jujutsu sorcerers. yeonhada was much more surprised than satoru was. the last time yeonhada had ever come across a sorcerer was when she graduated from a school for the younger generation of the tiny group. at the time, she was afraid. she had just left the clutches of the jujutsu world and finally got around to working for her law degree. being dragged back was not an option.
curses, those otherworldly manifestations of human negative emotion which were great at causing destruction in this world, and fighting them had been the bane of yeonhada's existence for as long as she could remember.
so, she tried to stay away from satoru. but satoru was visiting the city she lived in for a few days. on a "little vacation". he soon, very coincidentally and casually, saw her at her favorite tea shop, at a grocery store, and at the theaters. at that point, yeonhada had accepted she was not going to avoid this seemingly stalkerish man and she accepted the friendship that satoru kept offering ("fate", satoru had called it). it wouldn't be so bad to have someone to talk about curses with, would it? and so they were friends. she even met and befriended satoru's "bestie", suguru.
