Tracy was in for a surprise. She drove in her rusty starter car down a pothole infested dirt road that she hated with a passion. This was her first time driving by herself since she got her license, and she was told to get a job with her newfound freedom. So, Tracy chose the easiest job out of the suggestions her parents had given her: babysitting. Tracy had only babysat once before, but she was a bit confident with her abilities.
Tracy slowed down her car as the parents' house came into view until it creaked to a complete stop. Tracy got out and scanned the house. It was a two story farmhouse with a cozy image to it, but it was a bit ancient-looking. As she approached the porch, a couple came rushing out and the woman stopped at Tracy and the man headed towards their car.
"Thanks for coming out on such a short notice, Tracy." The woman told her as her husband started up the car.
"In a rush, Mrs. Dealon?" Tracy asked.
"Yeah, someone forgot what time our spa appointment was." She said, glaring at Mr. Dealon.
"Hey, it was an accident, alright? Come on, we're going to be late!" Her husband shouted from the car. Mrs. Dealon sighed and walked over to the car.
"There's stuff for lunch in the fridge and pizza money on the counter for dinner, okay?" Mrs. Dealon asked.
"Yep!" Tracy replied, and watched them pull out of the gravel driveway. She walked into the house and found the daughter playing with a doll in an expensively decorated living room that was a complete opposite of the outside. She was very small, maybe the age of 6 with a head of brunette hair.
"Hi! Are you Veronica?" Tracy asked. Veronica looked up from her doll and smiled a cute little smile.
"Yeah! What's your name?" Veronica asked her in reply. Tracy smiled. This- girl- is- adorable, she thought to herself.
"Tracy." She said. "So what do you want for lunch?" Veronica thought for a moment, putting a tiny balled up fist under her chin. She then pointed over to the fridge.
"Let's look in there!" She exclaimed. Tracy nodded and took Veronica into the kitchen, only to be taken aback. Wow, Tracy thought. Farmhouse on the outside, expensive estate on the inside. The kitchen was very modern with marble countertops and many expensive looking appliances. Veronica threw open the fridge and attentively searched the shelves. Tracy peered over her shoulder and spotted a bit of leftover lasagna.
"How about some lasagna?" Tracy asked Veronica. The girl literally grinned the biggest grin Tracy had ever seen. Veronica crazily nodded and Tracy laughed.
"I'll assume that's a yes then." She stated and pulled out the tin of lasagna. After lunch, they sat in the living room to relax; Veronica being glued to some weird cartoon and Tracy to an issue of Cosmopoppin'. Tracy flipped through page after page, with nothing really peaking her interest. She glanced up from the page to see Veronica fiddling with her hair. Tracy got up and went over to her.
"Hey, are you bored?" Tracy asked her her. Veronica glanced up at Tracy.
"A little." Veronica said and stood up. "Can we go outside?" She then asked. Tracy glanced outside to judge the conditions. A gloomy overcast hung itself over the sky, but the clouds weren't a dark enough hue for rain. Tracy thought for a moment.
"Let's go!" She answered and went to put on her shoes. Veronica followed suite and soon they were walking out of the house. Tracy led Veronica towards the backyard and paused. A large field of wheat was waving in the direction of the wind only a few hundred feet from the backyard. Tracy shrugged. She turned to Veronica.
