Joking - Chapter 30

"That dress looks good on you," Jamie smiles as I pull the hem of the grey dress that Sam and Holly gave me down. It's a knee length dress that has long sleeves and a high neck that resembles a scarf. Definitely a winter type of dress.

"Holly has good taste," I smile, putting some perfume on before we walk out of the door to go to Christmas lunch at Jamie's Aunty and Uncle's house.

"Wait, I've forgotten something," He says, stopping in the middle of the hall and patting his pockets,

"What?"

"My phone, I'll be one sec," He smiles, "Meet me in the car,"

I walk down stairs and zip up my coat before ducking into the car and shuffling over to the middle seat.

"So I'm assuming it fits," Sam smiles,

"Sure does," I nod, "You've got one talented girlfriend,"

Jamie runs down and pulls his hood up as it starts to rain and then jumps into the car.

"Next year, we're having Christmas with your family so it's warm," He chuckles kissing me swiftly on the cheek.

"Thanks J," Anne laughs as we pull out of the driveway and onto the road.

After a not too long car trip, we arrive at his family's place and race inside so we don't get soaked by the now very prominent rain.

"Jamie!" His Aunt squeals as we walk in and she comes over to say hello and give him a hug, "And you must be Jess!" She hugs me too, "I'm Jane, Anne's sister,"

"Nice to meet you,"

"You're such a beautiful girl," She smiles, looking between Jamie and I,

"Isn't she?" Jamie smiles and encircles one arm around my waist to guide me through the hall.

We spend about an hour to an hour and a half talking with his family and Jamie catching up with his cousins.

"Alright, so lets get lunch happening," Jane smiles and takes a seat at the table and we all walk towards our assigned seats. All of the parents in the room look to each other and smile and Jane, Anne and a few others who I've vaguely spoken to look at me and smile. What is going on?

"Jess," Anne says and I look up across the table to her. She points behind me and I turn around to find Jamie on one knee holding a diamond ring in a black velvet box. My hands fly up to my mouth with utter shock and excitement.

"Are you doing what I think you're doing," I chuckle,

"I was planning on it," He chuckles, running one of his hands through his hair, "But now I'm here I don't really know what to do,"

The whole room bursts out in laughter but then quieten down shortly after due to suspense.

"Jess," He sighs, "These last few months have been the best months of my life. You've added so much to me as a person and to my life and I can't imagine life without you and I understand that it's rather soon but the fact that I nearly lost you when I left you in Melbourne-"

There was a gasp behind me and I turn around to a confused looking Jane.

"I didn't leave leave her I just had to come home, Jane, calm down," He chuckles and there is a chorus of chuckles around the room, "But anyway, I wouldn't forgive myself if I lost you and I hadn't told you or shown just how much you really mean to me," He takes a shaky breath, "I honestly can't live without you anymore so will you marry me?"

I nod my head and barely whisper "yes," as he springs up and crushes me in a hug, kissing the side of my neck. "I love you," He whispers.

"I love you too,"

He pulls back and takes my left hand and carefully slides the ring with two small sapphires on either side of a decent sized diamond onto my finger.

"It matches the necklace," I blubber, as he wipes tears away from under my eyes.

"It sure does," He smiles, holding my head in his hands and leaning down and kissing me gently.

I turn around to face everyone and they all have proud smiles on their face. Anne has tears in her eyes and David has his arm around her in a loving way.

I turn back to him and compose myself before saying, "Are you sure you realize I was joking about the diamond ring for Christmas,"

Everyone bursts out laughing and he kisses me once again before we join the others at the table and get congratulated left right and centre.
