The softest breeze brushes through my long, dark hair and I can't help but release a sigh of content. The oceans waves crash softly against the sand and distant sounds of birds chirp happily as the sun begins to descend.
I should hurry before the sun sets and the darkness takes over. When the night sets in, it's the most dangerous time for me to be out in the open, unprotected.
My footsteps begin to rush as the temperature drops and my current house comes into view. A small, quaint cottage that the pack has allowed me to use whilst I am on their territory. It's not anything grand with a small vegetable garden out the front and creaky wooden stairs but I find the bright side of most things.
I have nothing to complain about. I love the freedom of my job, my ability to travel and explore while helping others.
Hurriedly opening the door, I close and lock it behind me with a huff.
Starting to prepare a quick dinner, my mind begins to wonder to my next summon. I am a freedom healer who constantly travels between packs and territories to assist with medical resources.
I'm currently on the East coast helping the Bloom pack as their Luna had gone into labour and her umbilical cord had wrapped around one of the pups neck. We got there just in time to help revive him. I could feel the relief and gratitude in the room as soon as his ear piercing cry echoed off the walls.
It's amazing the way a pack supports each other. When I arrived, I was given this house to stay in, welcoming gifts and offered all my meals to be cooked for me. I declined as I believe I am an independent person who doesn't like to have people fuss over them.
I'm not even a part of a pack but they treated me like I was, like I was their family. I've never had a family before. I was raised an orphan with no real maternal or paternal connections. I believe that's what has shaped me to be the strong headed person I am today.
A rapid knock to my front door breaks me from my train of thought.
"Shit" I mutter and turn off the stove top that has burnt my chicken to a crisp. Walking to the door, it basically gets ripped off it's hinges by a red faced teenager.
"Luna has started bleeding again, and won't stop. You need to help her now." His shaky voice rushes out and before I know it, we are sprinting towards the pack house.
As we enter, it is pure chaos. I can hear the Alpha screaming from the doorway and I follow his stern voice. Pack members rush around, feeling the distress of their leaders and wanting to help.
"Luna," I mutter as I enter the bedroom. She is laying on her back, surrounded by her own blood. The mattress tinted red and a metallic smell in the air.
Tears stream down her ageing face as her arm reaches out to her mate. His agony can be felt around the room as he rushed to her side.
"Help her. Help her now." His strong voice demands from the side of her bed. His eyes narrow on my figure as I take in my surroundings. This is going to be a problem.
My healing powers are a blessing and a hindrance. My powers are charged by the sun and if the sun is not present, I can't heal anyone or anything.
But if it's night time, I can transfer the pain. This doesn't require any healing charge but does take its toll on my body. Mentally, not physically.
"Get some towels, water and the first aid kit." I order the young boy who ran to my house. His head nods quickly before he runs from the room in a panic.
I walk over to the Luna and she cannot hold in her cry. "My babies," she mutters softly with a sob. Her face is swollen with her tears as she winces often.
"Luna, what happened," I ask softly, not wanting to push her to start crying even heavier. She hiccups softly but continues to cry. My eyes swing over to the Alpha who's growling softly.
"She's ripped her stitches when one of the babies was crying. She was in such a rush, she bent over to grab his blanket and ripped herself open." His voice rough, showing signs of emotion.
The young boy runs back into the room with the first aid kit under his arm. I take it from him and find a needle and thread.
"You know my powers rely on the sun but I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you're not in pain." I console the Luna. The Alpha growls hearing that I cannot heal her but with a small glare from my direction, he quietens down.
I start sewing her stitches back up and clean up the blood from the surrounding areas. By the time I finish, the Luna has calmed down to small hiccups. The stress she must be feeling not being able to see her babies as her body cannot cope with the pain.
"Clear the room," I tell the Alpha and sit beside the Luna. "You heard her. Leave." The Alpha growls and everyone rushes out, closing the door behind them.
Taking the Luna's hand in mine, I close my eyes and try to feel the pain in the air. My powers allow me to find physical pain and heal or transfer it to myself in order to stop it from continuing. Not to the extent of killing myself but my body feeds off pain. Relishes the feeling.
With my eyes closed, I breath deeply and begin humming. Calling the pain to come to me. With my hand warming up, the pain begins to enter my body from the Luna's.
It's a strange feeling, not being able to feel pain. It's like your body has come alive and vibrates as it tries to regulate itself. It's more of a mental battle then physical.
With a final gasp from the Luna, I stop humming and open my eyes. They shine bright with darkness - as black as the devils soul. The pain festers within as my eyes roll back into my head.
