chapter eight
[ trust gets you killed ]Nakili breathed, her hands practically shaking at her sides the more she thought about Kiri almost dying. the thing was... Nakili told Kiri to trust. but trust almost got Kiri killed, and now Nakili felt guilty.
Nakili walked to the doorway of the Sully's marius. Neytiri looked up from what it was that she was doing. "Nakili." she said simply.
Nakili swallowed her nervousness like tap water down a drain. ( she doesn't even know what tap water is but go with it.) "hi, ma'am." she holds her hands behind her back.
Neytiri thinks for a few seconds and with unsure eyes, she starts. "how are you?" of course, Neytiri didn't blame Nakili for what happened at spirit tree, but she knew Nakili had to take responsibility. Nakili knew that.
Neytiri shared a light lipped smile with Nakili. "i'm fine, thank you." she replied. not moving an inch, her eyes glanced around the room. "how's Kiri?" Nakili tilted her head.
Neytiri's eyes lit up and a smile appears on her porcelain skin. "would you like to speak with her?" she rested her hands in her lap.
"yes, please." Nakili nodded. Neytiri pointed towards the room Kiri was rested in. "thank you." Nakili said rather softly as she started towards the door.
"Nakili." Nakili heard her name called out by Neytiri.
Nakili almost turned immediately towards Nakili. "yes ma'am." respect was smooth through her voice.
Neytiri knew what she was aiming to say, but in what words would they be said. she looked down for a second and for a second she didn't know what to say. then, the words, they came to her. "you are strong. but you are scared." Nakili now knew what Neteyam meant when he said that they talked alike. when Neytiri spoke, it was almost like she was hearing her own voice in her head. "you have strong heart." Nakili blinked a few times. maybe she didn't expect these words to be spoken to her. "thank you, Nakili." Neytiri's voice sincere and genuine.
Nakili couldn't talk, afraid she might tear up. her own parents never spoke to her like this. in fact, nobody has ever said anything genuine to her. she was never told that one was proud of her, nobody told her that she had a strong heart, nobody called her strong, and certainly nobody told her that she was scared. nobody was even aware of her. Nakili wasn't even sure anyone would dare care.
Nakili smiled, however without her eyes, and nodded to Neytiri as to say thank you. the words she couldn't speak said more than the words she could.
Nakili turned around with tears in her eyes, but quickly sucked it up like a big girl and smiled to herself. she walked into the room as Kiri laid in her cot, facing the wall. she got on her knees beside the bed as Kiri turned over. "hi, Kiri." she smiled.
when Kiri realized who was there, she jumped up with a gasp. "oh my Eywa, Nakili." Kiri pulled Nakili up on the edge of the bed and engulfed her into a hug.
"are you okay?" she mumbled into Kiri's hair.
"i'm okay." Kiri nodded and lifting her head up.
Nakili's hands rested underneath her friends arms. "you scared me terribly so." Nakili shook her head as she looked into Kiri's big yellow eyes.
"i don't know why it happened. i really don't know-" Kiri shook her head as tears welled in her eyes.
Nakili shook her head and rested her hands on her shoulders. "no, it's okay. you're okay." Kiri's sniffled, and soon only nodded.
Nakili allowed her hands to rest in her lap. she watched Kiri's expression, she knew why Kiri wore it. Kiri suddenly looks up from her hands. "Neteyam told me how you brought me up out of the water." a smile creeping onto her cheeks.
Nakili raised her eyebrow area. "did he tell you how he gave you the air."
Kiri knew that Nakili didn't know the real definition of 'gave you air.' but who was she to judge. "cpr. cardiopulmonary resuscitation." Kiri explained.
"smart girl." Nakili smiled with a breathy laugh. "yes, that." she nodded.
then, another thought was brought to Kiri's mind. "speaking of Neteyam, is there something there between you and my brother?"
Nakili's eyes widened and if there were water in her mouth, she would've have spit it out. "what do you mean?" her eyes squinted. she knew what Kiri meant.
"i mean, is there something there." Kiri wanted to laugh. Kiri could see right through the two, and their few interactions said all that it needed to say. when Nakili tilted her head with confusion, Kiri started again. "do you like each other."
Nakili did in fact like Neteyam. "that wouldn't be a good thing." she said and looked down.
"why not?" Kiri asked.
Nakili looked back up. "your brother, he's Omaticaya; different clan than me, Metkayina. i'm not sure if that would work out, Kiri."
"none of that matters." Kiri saw the good in them; she saw the good potential the two had, in fact, she hadn't even thought about the fact that they were part of two different clans, because that is just how much it didn't matter to Kiri.
"maybe not to us. my family say we are the future. we must make future choices." Nakili exhaled as Kiri watched her expression. "they are saying that i need to use my brain... before my heart." she put her hand on her heart. that's not what Eywa would want for her.
"how do we know that this isn't a good choice." Kiri furrowed her eyebrows for her.
"a choice between two people must be mutual. i hardly know Neteyam." Nakili's voice low and sonder as her eyes relaxed; full of emotion.
"but you can." Kiri put her hand on Nakili's. "Nakili, he talks of you like he's known you all his life."
Nakili was shocked. he's only known her all of three weeks. "all his life?" Nakili furrowed her eyebrows.
here's the thing, the most unspoken thing ever, Nakili didn't need to fall in love.
Nakili was only here to see what her mother could not. that meant that whenever her mother was supposed to die... was when she will die. that could be any day and Nakili was rather prepared. she was going to be given back to Eywa without a trace because that was just how it was supposed to be for her.
Nakili didn't fear her death. she would simply smile through it, because Nakili had trained herself for the day to come ever day. learning new things and meeting new people. she just hadn't expected a relationship. she wanted one, but didn't know if she could have one.
Kiri nodded in attempt to get Nakili to understand. Nakili didn't understand. "yes, dad already had to give him the talk." Kiri laughed.
Nakili gasped and clasped her hands over her mouth in exaggeration. "the talk?" Nakili tilted her head down to look at Kiri through her eyelashes.
"the talk." Kiri said quietly before the two started giggling like a dozen hyenas. (they don't even know what hyenas are.)
"oh." Nakili said through her small-voiced laughter.
Kiri flicked some of her hair back before starting; her laughter falling away. "Nakili. don't rush anything, that is not what i'm saying." Kiri looked down for a second before looking back up. "all i am saying is that if you feel anything—even if you simply just like his eyes—act on it." Nakili widened her eyes at Kiri's outburst. "he's getting the same talk too." Nakili smiled.
Kiri watched Nakili think. she could tell that there was much on her mind. Kiri leaned forward to get a better look at her face. "like you told me. trust." she then signed the words trust. "trust me."
"i trust you." Nakili signed back to Kiri.
