Gravel crunches as the wheels of a mustard ford come to a stop on the driveway of an old house. The house had a strange look about it, the look of past grandeur that had since fallen into ruin and had (very specifically) been renovated with the modern grey concrete box rooms that were very fashionable at this time. Loud car music squeaks and dies as two girls get out.

Layla stepped onto the gravel while staring up at the house with awe
'Ruby never told me that she lived in a place like this!" she glanced back into the car next to her,
"Are you sure this is the right place AJ?"
"Positive." came a muffled voice from the passenger seat as AJ climbed out of the car, past a jungle of lacrosse gear and old trainers. It was a few minutes before she was fully out of the car, tucking something in the back pocket of her skirt and wafting a few stray strands of blonde hair out of her eyes. "You ready to get this over with?" AJ added sarcastically as they both started along the driveway in the direction of the large oak front door, weaving their way through the two cars that were already parked. One of which, as Layla noticed from seeing on the front of a newspaper just this morning, was the new race car that supposedly cost tens, if not hundreds of thousands of pounds.
"These guys must be loaded!" she muttered under her breath while still seeing the splendour of everything around her.
Layla was only woken from this trance by a loud shout from the door of the residence -
"Staying out there are we?" AJ chuckled as she rang the doorbell, "hurry up before my fucking feet fall off!"
By the time Layla had reached AJ the large oak door was already creaking open. They both stepped back to allow room for a middle-aged man to step out onto the threshold,
"What brings two lovely young ladies to my door at this hour?" he watched them questioningly as they both looked for an answer,
After a few seconds, AJ answered confidently, "we are here to pick up ruby for the work experience trip that leaves tonight for Bristol."
His face lit up as he registered who they were, "oh, you're her friends, she will be down..." his sentence was cut abruptly short by a red-headed girl rushing up to the door from behind, "hey guys!" she fired a wide grin at them and continued. "Sorry I'm not ready yet, why don't you two come in for a cuppa?" she stepped back into the house and beckoned for them to follow her.
Layla advanced across the threshold and into the building. A large blanket of warmth enveloped her. She gasped as her eyes took in the beauty of the house before her; the floors were made of beautiful mahogany with lush rugs in all the right places. A small electric chandelier hung from a high ceiling, illuminating the room with a warm, welcome glow. Scents of cooking floated from a room to Layla's left.
"AJ, come and help me lift my bag down there!" Ruby's muffled voice came from the long staircase, "I can't do it by myself!"
Layla's eyes followed AJ up the stairs until she disappeared. She sighed and turned to see a cyan car rolling across the gravel, the breaks squealed and it ground slowly to a halt. A figure wearing dark blue jeans and a black turtleneck emerged, almost slipping on the damp surface. She righted herself swiftly and made her way up towards the house.
"Iris!" AJ, done with helping ruby, squeezed past Layla onto the threshold, "we were wondering where you were!" Iris stiffened, fixing her already immaculate brunette ponytail.
