"Kyle I've told you a million times, take those damn cat ears off, they're banned from this house!"
My mum's Texan screech rattles my eardrums and I press my black-nailed hands to my ears and wait until she calms down. She's such a damn Karen all the time, never letting me do what I like and I hate her for it. I swear it's her mission to make me run away and join the circus. Surely they'd want someone like me. A Femboy, that is. I can dance all those Tik Tok dances and my hips swing so smoothly in my maid skirt. My alluring presence alone would bring a crowd to their knees. But it's a pipe dream, an illusion. I'll never be that. Not as long as my Karen still reigns over me with her iron fists. She has three actually. One is hidden in her bottom drawer. Anyway.. I'm thinking about sneaking out with all my Fem stuff and hiding it somewhere. I have no idea where yet but I'm sure I'll find a place soon.
The screeching seems to finally cease and I cautiously unplug my ears and listen for the telltale footsteps of Karen. She walks so menacingly and it feels like I'm always doing something wrong. Perhaps even existing is a heinous crime in her beady eyes. I grumble to myself as I stand up from the kitchen table and adjust my sparkly pink cat ears. If only my mum wasn't so cringe, I'd be on a stage in front of thousands of people, shaking my pale ass in a frilly pink skirt. Damn, life was so unfair. The only thing I honestly looked forward to was when it rained. The rare occasions afterward when a rainbow appeared in the sky was the best thing ever.
The reason I adored rainbows so much was because they didn't have an end and no one can grab it and pull it out of the sky. It's untouchable. It's free to do what it likes and it looks good doing it. They gave me hope.
I've just left my room with my Fem gear when the tinnitus-inducing Siren shriek of my mother's voice sounds from behind me. I turn around painfully slowly to face her. Her ashy blonde side fringe dangles in front of one omniscient blue eye."And where do you think you're going, Kyle?"
She hisses ominously, looking as unhinged as ever. Her ability to know when you're lying is ridiculous; it's like she's psychic. I wouldn't be surprised given she's absolutely insane. She talks to herself a lot, muttering about managers and disrespectful young folk."I'm going out for a while, Mum."
My timorous voice cracks a bit as she stares me down like she's trying to make me explode with sheer determination. Her stare is icier than a polar bear's ass as she imitates the 5th step of the macarena dance."Well," I say, giggling nervously but cutely as I edge past her, "I'd better be off then."
I grip the glittery sports bag carrying my Fem stuff and try to march down the hallway with some dignity. I wasn't expecting what came out of Karen's mouth next."I want you to move out. You're too much of a little Fem-hoe and I won't have your cringe presence, or your stupid, stinky Lynx Africa tarnishing my home any longer. Do you understand me Kyle?"
My almost dignified exit crumbles as I literally stumble in shock at what she's said. I can feel my cat ears are askew as I regain my balance, but I don't try to fix them. I feel broken and defeated. My ears wouldn't feel right if they were symmetrical. It's how I feel right now. Disproportionate. Distant. Alien. She starts forward and rips the headwear from my silvery hair.
"These are disgusting! I wouldn't be caught dead calling you my son!"
Tears start dripping from my eyes, but it's okay, my eyeliner is salt water proof. I try my best to look my cutest and sexiest while adding my superficial sadness layer in between. This was good practice for me, albeit my steadily declining mental health. Karen decides to take things further by throwing my sparkly ears to the ground in rage and stomping them into the dirty gray carpet. I feel as though a part of me has been roughly ripped out as the scene unfolds before my teary (but cute and pretty) blue eyes.“You don’t have to worry about that anymore. I was planning on moving out today anyway.”
I hold up my Fem bag.“Whatever! And get a damn haircut will you! You look like a girl!” She delivers a sharp tug to my silvery locks, snarling in disgust.
