My Brothers Best Friend

I paint my wrist a pretty red to silence the demons in my head , I've begun to become numb to the pain of a blade on my wrist . My brother would tell me that I shouldn't damage my pretty body with the hurt from others words or the words that my brain tells my head , but it's more complicated than that and he doesn't know , if anyone in my family knew I would become the attention of the family and the pressure of being perfect already messed with my head .

" Amelia we have to go " Alec my brother says with a little rap on the door . I put the blade back in my desk and pull my sweater over my wrist more , taking a deep breath in I plaster a smile on my face and open the door .

"I've been waiting on you , I've been ready for hours " I say shoving him a little as I make my way out the door and down the stairs , he starts chasing after me and I quickly start dashing for the car forgetting that he has the Keys . I try to open the door but he locks it and starts walking very slowly towards me , I'm slowly backing up to behind the car when he dashes at me and grabs me before I have the chance to run away .

"I don't even know why you try, you know I'll get you eventually " he says putting me down on the passenger seat . He gets in the car and we start making our way to school ,alecs a senior and I'm a junior . I'm really gonna miss him when he's gone next year , he wants to attend UCLA and so do I . As we pull up to the school I think about how much of a shit hole this place is , I don't have any friends here and I've been here for 3 years already . Then again why would anyone want to be with the schools outcast .

"Amelia it's going to be okay " he sighs before getting out the car as I do the same . Taking a deep breath we walk in and I head with my brother over to his friends until the bell for first period to start rings . His friends don't take any mind for me so I just put in my AirPods and listen to music while watching Alec have fun with his friends. I'm suddenly shoved to the floor , landing hard on my forearms I look up trying to see who pushed me . Some guy with curly brown fluffy hair turns around and reaches his hand out , I hesitate before reaching my hand up to be picked up . The sleeves of my hoodie rolls down for a second , I quickly let go of his arm standing at my full height and bring my sleeve back down .

I look around hoping that nobody saw but all eyes are on me , I can only hide my face behind my brother as he walks with me to my class . He gives me a kiss on the forehead before jogging off to his class , while I sit at my desk waiting for the teacher to finally start the lesson . I didn't remember even hearing the bell ring after I was pushed .

My teacher quickly starts going into a lesson about some sort of ancient story's as I zone out while looking at the board . My phone vibrates on the table as I flip it around to read the text message .

I'm sorry

It said , I quickly look around the room trying to find out who sent me the message , it's only when I notice that fluffy haired guy staring right at me 4 seats across the room that I know it's him .

I say back trying to need the conversation before it even started , how did he get my number ? Class ends shortly after , grabbing my bag I make my way through my next 3 periods . After my first 4 classes are done it's lunch , I go to my usual table that consist of my brother and his friends . They all ignore me as usual except for my brother who gives me a kiss on the head before going back to his conversation.

"Okay guys , prom is coming up soon and the theme is expensive , what are we gonna do? " my brother asks

"Obviously we're gonna wear suits " his friends points out with a roll of his eye . im just silently watching them talk when this girl , her names lily I think , walks up to the table and starts passing out invitations . im shocked when  I receive one , everyone usually ignores me . the invitation was to a party she's throwing , its an invite only party . 

"Amelia do you want to go ?" Alec asks , I think of ra moment . Do I really want to live the rest of my school year as the outcast kid . This is my chance to do something for myself and who knows maybe ill make some friends .

" Yeah , sure" he smiles and praises me for wanting to go which instantly makes me feel a bit more confident. Lunch eventually ends and I make my way to my free period , as im walking around the back of the school to make way to the grass patch , the fluffy haired guy appears out of nowhere and steps into my path .

" Excuse me " I say trying to go around him 

" Wait " he says grabbing my wrist , I look at his hand and yank it off my arm. As I continue walking he starts jogging to keep up .

" Hey princess , no need to be rude " I roll my eyes 

" Dont call me that " 

" I think it fits " sighing heavily I stop and turn to him , hoping to get rid of him soon .

" What do you want ?" he smirks 

" Just wanted to talk , that's all" I scoff walking away 

" I don't want to so leave " I stop walking as we've made it to a grass patch at the back of the school . Setting down my bag , I lay out across the field . I close my eyes for a second before I can feel his gaze on me, sitting up I look at him as he's just leaning against a tree .

" Can I be honest with you ?" he asks , I nod . He walks closer to me until he's sitting down .

" Im curious about you , you have no friends , dont hangout with anyone but your brother "

"What's your point ?" 

" Well I guess my point is , why are you living in your brothers shadow when you can live your own life ?"

I never thought anyone would notice me like that so I guess the question is , why does he care ?
