Meeting the Sullys

At Tonowari's request, Y/n left her marui pod for the first time in what seemed forever. The salty ocean breeze was refreshing, and the sand was soft on her feet. The Sea People stared in surprise at seeing a Forest Na'vi other than one of the Sully family on their shores. It only took a second for them to realise who it was; Y/n. Aside from the natural Omaticaya blue skin, Y/n dressed as Metkayina. Eventually, the pair reached the center of Awa'atlu.

"I am proud to call you my daughter, Y/n," Tonowari smiled at Y/n.

"That is relieving," Y/n responded, a little dryly. Tonowari chuckled. "I have business to attend to. You should talk to the Sully children. They are around your age, I believe - they should make nice company."

"Okay," Y/n muttered. Tonowari patted her shoulder supportively, then walked off.

Seeing as standing around made Y/n stand out more than she already was, she decided to spend some time at sea. Living on the outskirts of Awa'atlu meant that there was not much opportunity to connect with the creatures of the reef. Even though Y/n was one of the Metkayina, she was not skilled at riding the ilu. While they did not require an individual bond like the ikran of the forest, there was simply no way to ride one without being seen - something that Y/n had avoided for a long time.

So, ilu riding it was. Y/n stepped into the water. It was warm, and the soft sand cradled her toes. The scales of tiny fish blinded her eyes, reflecting the hot sun.

"Hello? Who are you?"

Y/n winced and turned around, expecting the worst. However, her eyes were met by none other than Kiri - one of the children of Jake and Neytiri Sully. Kiri's face dropped. You wondered what had made her upset. "Have I done something to upset you?" Y/n asked.

"No, not at all," Kiri smiled, then sighed, "from afar, you look a lot like Neteyam. I'm sorry. I thought that maybe-

"Do not apologise. I have been rude as to not introduce myself. I am Y/n, adoptive daughter of the Olo'eyktan and Tsahìk of this clan. I already know who you are."

"I didn't know Tonowari and Ronal had adopted you. I heard that the clan had taken in Forest People other than my family, but I didn't think the chief would've taken you in. It's nice to meet you."

Y/n said nothing, staring at the ocean. Kiri stared as well. Some ilu were frolicking in the ocean with young Na'vi. They were happy. Kiri turned to Y/n. "Why don't you live in the forest with the Omaticaya clan?" she asked. Y/n sighed. "I was exiled for something I did not do. There is no point in explaining, you would not be able to comprehe-

"I know how you feel," Kiri offered. "I'm like you, too. Well, not exactly. I feel outcast as well, I'm different. I don't know if I should even be here."

"What do you mean?"

"When I did tsaheylu with the Spirit Tree in the ocean, I went unconscious. Mum and Dad say I had a seizure, but as to why, they don't know."

Y/n stared at Kiri. Her eyes were expectant, yet calm. Kiri walked into the water and held her tswin. An ilu swam up to Kiri and circled her. Kiri closed her eyes and lowered herself into the water, kneeling on the sea bed. "Maybe I couldn't handle it," she laughed, patting an ilu affectionately, "maybe I'm just not meant to talk to Eywa like everyone else." Y/n followed Kiri into the sea. "How are you calm all of the time?" she asked. Kiri connected her kuru to to the ilu's.

"The first step is to stop talking so formally to me. Loosen up a bit, that'll help," Kiri said, mounting her ilu, "and maybe have a little more faith in yourself. I don't know what you've been through, but I think it's been a lot. Sometimes you just have to forget who you are to be who you are."

Y/n hesitantly held her tswin. Kiri nodded encouragingly. Y/n bonded with an ilu, and closed her eyes. It had been a long time since she had performed tsaheylu, the neural bond connecting creatures on Pandora. Y/n mounted her ilu and looked at Kiri. "Did I do well?" she asked.

Kiri smiled. "You'd do a lot better if you opened your eyes when you looked at me, silly."
