It is my birthday.
I found myself driving over the railroad tracks of my city. My eyes wondered toward the skyline but not really taking it in.
When i reach the place i press down the accelerator. The streets looked the same, but my feet knows where to go even if i dont guide them.
My old house.
I walked through the stairs, up to my room.
I pressed my palm into one of the panels where i felt familiar with. A small box.
My eyes drifted when he spoke.
"Hey."
Standing at the door, he smiled. "Happy birthday. I thought you wouldnt come."
I smiled back.
He held my hand.
We walked and run through the streets, until we get exhausted. Laughing. We did a lot of things the whole day. Amusement park, our favorite band's live, we even climbed at Tokyo tower. I had fun. The happiest day of my life.
The sun is drifting.
We came back to my house, watching the sunset through the windows.
"You know what, I love you."
i blurted out.
He doesnt seem surprised.
Hugging me, he held up the small box in the panel i was staring at a while ago.
He opened it, grinning.
But there is that sadness in his eyes that doesnt quite matched with the lines of his handsome smile.
He held up the ring.
"I want you to marry me."
I was so happy and overwhelmed tears started flowing on our cheeks, both of us crying.
I remember the days we spent together, hiding to people, keeping whatever we have in secret because of my band, both in love and contented.
And i remember. What happened after he bought that ring. It was expensive. But it costed more than it was supposed to. I was mad. I want to punch him. This is unfair. So much unfair.
Tears are falling on his cheeks.
"But I knew better, right? I must let you go."
I shudder at the word. The pain surges back again. Sadness eating me, i feel like i am drifting away from the world.
May 21, 2014.
He promised to meet me here.
On that day, i heard a certain accident.
I waited, he was supposed to come, but he didnt arrived.
Not until now.
"This is the best gift i can give you."
He threw the ring through the windows.
"I love you so much Mami. I didnt want to leave you. Im so sorry."
Crying, he kissed me.
I knew. He wanted me to forget, and move forward like i am supposed to.
He's gone. And crying feels so hopeless, so stupid, but its all i can do.
I have to accept. This is his final gift. He doesnt want my whole life wasted with grief, mourning his death.
I push myself to stand.
I stare at the empty box.
Later i hear voices down the corridor. My friends, Rina Tomo and Haru.
No more crying.
I want to embrace the last memories he has given me. The best and final gift of letting me go. And I have to let him go too. I knew thats what he wanted. And so i have to try.
"Yappari Mami-chan, youre here." Haru said.
Those two girls looked worried.
I smiled.
"Wanna hang out? Who's in."
